NOKIA N97 Pro Reviews

gadgetreview‘s review Edit

So by now you can tell I’m not a huge fan of Nokia’s N97. For a company of such size and prowess I really did expect more and perhaps that best explains my dismay with the handset. I’m still and will forever be a fan of Nokia as I believe they make solid, long lasting phones but their attempt at a touch centric device is more in vein and playing catch up with the market. They’ve most certainly nailed it from an optic’s perspective but the core phone features, aside from battery life, fall short.

Nokia's N97 is a beast of a phone, with every feature imaginable in its 150g, 18mm-thick case. As well as the usual WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS, it has a backlit QWERTY keyboard that slides out from under the screen, a 5-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens and twin-LED flash, and 32GB of internal memory.

The N97 has plenty of features and its touch based operating system is still something of a novelty for Nokia. We aren't convinced it is as responsive or intuitive as other touch based smartphone operating systems, though.

It's chunkier and uglier than its Apple rival, but its slide-out QWERTY keyboard makes text entry a doddle. The touch-screen is fairly responsive, but there's no Apple-esque multi-touch and zooming in/out. A 32GB HDD can be boosted via the microSD card slot, while the 40-hour battery life for music playback is impressive. It's compatible with MP3, AAC and WAV files, plus MP4 video files up to the 3.5in screen's 640 x 360 resolution.

reghardware‘s review Edit

Nevertheless the N97 sort of scrapes by, for now. It's fast and responsive, the worst bugs will are certain to be fixed, and the most violently ugly parts of the user experience will be quietly thrown overboard. That leaves an OK iPlayer, an OK music player, and a phone. Put the N97 against the iPhone or the Pre, and the comparison isn't flattering, but put it against another subsidised midrange offering, and it might find a loyal customer.

Nokia is playing catch up in a market that has become extremely competitive in the past couple of years. In that game and at that price, there's only one thing that really counts: the user experience. The Nokia N97 is not a "bad" phone and it doesn't deserve the some of the harsh reviews that I've seen recently. In fact, it has good hardware, great storage, and nice design. It is also better than the Sony Ericsson Xperia.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

In common with the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, the Nokia N97 is a really cool phone that can do a lot, but the features just don't come together as seamlessly as in other smartphones on the market. The Symbian OS doesn't simply need an update; it needs an overhaul to compete with iPhone OS and Palm's WebOS.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

It's difficult to know how to judge the Nokia N97, as the first impressions thanks to great build quality and an excellent QWERTY keyboard made us think this could be the greatest Nokia phone yet. But there's just too many annoying parts to the Nokia N97 to label it a classic.

I wish I could have found more positive things to say about this device. I'm sure fans will not be happy with this review, but the simple truth is that the Nokia N97 is the most unusable phone I have ever held to date. I was notified on my second run with the phone (I gave up on it the first time around) that a major software update was available. After hassling with the Windows-only updater and more low battery issues, I finally accomplished the update. I saw no practical improvement.

The Nokia N97 spent a bit more time in development because Nokia needed its launch to be nearly-perfect. It's not a nearly perfect device, though.

Nokia's 2009 flagship phone offers a little bit of everything. This is a case where more features, however, don't necessarily make for a better phone.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

To be honest, the Nokia N97 is the device that will set the standard for its upcoming N series. As the first N series device to utilize the S60 touch UI, it isn't easy, and the Finnish company is still muddling around to edge itself further in the competition. Introducing widgets that actually display snippets of info, instead of redirecting you to the web browser is what widgets should have been, granting you quick and easy access to the information you need.

phonemag‘s review Edit

In our first-impressions, we described the Nokia N97 as a serious, business-like phone. That remains our lasting impression, despite the multimedia features on offer. Unfortunately, usability issues like the less than mediocre touch functionality and lackluster QWERTY keyboard are likely to prove just as annoying to business users as they do to everyone else.

Overall, the N97 is a fantastic piece of hardware. Top end specs, a great screen, near-infinite storage and more features than you can shake a stick at mean that this handset is among the most capable in the marketplace.

The N97 is a feature-packed smartphone and has plenty of memory for bulking its software content. But it doesn't do its Communicator heritage justice and I can't see the business community taking to it. For consumers, the touch version of Symbian feels as if it is running to catch up with the best of the competition and lagging some way behind.

Nokia's monster N97 smartphone is finally available on both sides of the Atlantic. The hardware is good, but what about the software? Ricky tests it all out in this in-depth review, with HD video.

Softpedia‘s review Edit

I wanted to like Nokia N97, I have tried to find something new and innovative that could make me buy one, but I simply couldn't find a strong reason to do it. There are other communication solutions that offer more than Nokia N97 and for a much reasonable price. My impression is that the Finnish giant launched another "unfinished" product, which became obsolete right at launch.

GSMArena‘s review Edit

They don't get any bigger than that. A launch of this caliber can aptly be called inauguration day. The release of Nokia N97 is the Nseries counter-move that geeks have been waiting for since November. Easily one of the most complete smartphones ever created, the N97 has been haunting Symbian buffs' dreams for quite a while.

Phone Arena‘s review Edit

The Nokia N97 is the flagship device of the manufacturer at the moment and Nokia vaunts it as being not only a top of the range device, but a “mobile computer” as well. This certainly gets things rather too far, since computers should be able to cope with wide variety of tasks these days. The Nokia N97 sports quite nice specifications indeed like 3.5-inch touch sensitive screen, full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, 3G (HSDPA 3.6Mbps), A-GPS, 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar optics and...

While the Nokia N97 is packed with features and offers the freedom of an unlocked phone, its clunky touch interface, sky-high price tag, and outdated operating system make it hard to recommend when there are better touch-screen smartphones on the market.
