But the real story is and will remain the Athlon 64 3000+ processor that is the first 64-bit processor to offer value and performance for the 64-bit applications (when they show up) for the cost-conscience consumer. Buyers of the Athlon 64 3000+ processor are going to get a much better deal than those who have or will buy the Athlon 64 3200+ CPUs.

The Athlon 64 Model 3000+ was a much-needed CPU in AMD's performance lineup. The Model 3000+ produces benchmark results which are fast enough to make potential buyers re-think a purchase of a 3.0GHz Pentium 4 Northwood or Prescott. It's also around 15% cheaper than the 3200+ version but benchmarks also show that it is, in the worst case scenario, no more than 10% behind the original Clawhammer.

One important lesson to learn from today's look at AMD's Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester CPU is that clock speed isn't a decent indicator of all-around performance right now. Core architectures are distinct enough to make a model-numbering system the only sensible method of comparing rival CPUs.

Those looking at building a gaming system within a reasonable budget will probably be unable to refuse what the new AM2 3000+ processors have to offer. For as little as $90 you can have your hands on a product that has the potential to take out the latest and greatest AMD and Intel processors. The next step is to source a motherboard that is capable of utilizing this amazing overclocking power.

As we saw in the tests, Athlon 64 3000+ can outperform even faster Intel CPUs in most benchmarks. We can also state that Athlon 64 3000+ is faster than Athlon XP 3200+. This way, it definitely means that this processor is one of the best buys in its price category from price-to-performance point of view.
