The launch of the Athlon 64 3400+ processor is another feather in AMD’s hat. The 3400+ is a great performer and tops our list for gaming and application processor. It's the best CPU you can get without spending the big bucks on the Athlon FX-51.

HEXUS‘s review Edit Like Unlike

Like any company, a CPU's fundamentals need to be sound. The Model 3400+'s are. Performance in spades, at least two chipsets with solid, stable support and a third on the way, clever engineering through Cool'n'Quiet technology (when it works. It's up to motherboard manufacturers to ensure boards are compliant), and cheaper models on the horizon make it, for us, the CPU of 2003.

It will allow a considerably low-cost Athlon 64 3400+ demonstrate very attractive price-to-performance ratio, as it will offer comparable performance at a pretty low price of $417 at launch. As a result, the performance difference between Athlon 64 FX-51 and the new Athlon 64 3400+ is hardly noticeable at all.

Tom's Hardware‘s review Edit Like Unlike

It's a top quality CPU that's especially suitable for games and that also lives up to its model name - albeit only in this category. At the end of the day, it still lags slightly behind the Pentium 4, a deficit that the 64 bit architecture could compensate for in the medium term, however. In the short term, Cool & Quiet could do the job, as Intel doesn't offer this type of energy management for desktop processors yet. We can only hope that the motherboard makers take note.

The Athlon 64 3400+ is a step forward for AMD, taking the crown for fastest consumer processor in the process. The asking price is high, but far more reasonable than the FX51 and the P4EE.
