The Athlon FX-53 does improve the professional performance of the FX line as well, but with HyperThreading, the P4 is still able to lay claim to a couple of benchmarks in this area. The FX-53 processor takes the performance crown, that is for sure.

HEXUS‘s review Edit Like Unlike

Stock performance is truly excellent, just as one would expect. The bottom line is very simple. AMD's delivered performance in spades with its new socket-939 processors; performance that makes Intel's Pentium 4s look impotent in comparison.

xbitlabs‘s review Edit Like Unlike

In most benchmarks Athlon 64 FX-53 working at 2.4GHz frequency outperforms all alternatives from Intel including even Pentium 4 extreme Edition 3.4GHz featuring 2MB of L3 cache memory. However, the gaming performance of Athlon 64 FX-53 is beyond any competition, which is its best trump in front of dedicated gamers.

Tom's Hardware‘s review Edit Like Unlike

Compared to $999 for the 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition, the $733 price tag for the Athlon64 FX-53, represents a great value, especially in consideration of the performance differences between the two processors. Indeed, the FX is a whopping 35% cheaper than the P4 Extreme Edition. The processor supports the AMD-backed Cool & Quiet to reduce dissipation and fan noise during idle or partial-load phases, and, together with the Service Pack 2 for WindowsXP, offers more security. Overclocking is built-in.

With a retail price of almost £600, the FX-53 is far from cheap and you'd have to be a serious performance junky to stump up the cash. That said, you will be getting the fastest CPU that AMD has ever made, and the basis for building PC that will make short work of anything you care to throw at it.
