What it really comes down to is the specific games you play and the settings you intend to use. If you won't use AA or you are have a long-term love affair with a game for which Nvidia's new card offers a big performance advantage, go with the new Core 216 card. If you want to use AA a lot, especially higher AA modes, the 1GB Radeon HD 4870 is the better bet.

Tom's Hardware‘s review Edit Like Unlike

With the same qualities as the Radeon HD 4850 but at a higher price point, the Radeon HD 4870 manages to compete directly with the GeForce GTX 260 – it’s both a little faster and a good deal less expensive than the Nvidia card, and without the excessive noise. Despite its higher power consumption, with prices as they stand currently, there’s really no doubt that it’s the better choice.

The RV770 GPU looks to be an unequivocal success on almost every front. In its most affordable form, the Radeon HD 4850 delivers higher performance overall than the GeForce 9800 GTX and redefines GPU value at the ever-popular $199 price point. Meanwhile, the RV770's most potent form is even more impressive, in my view.

A pair of HD4870 cards is a good option if you are looking for the best of the best to go with your Intel-based motherboard but with a price of at least $540, it is a bit too expensive to outright recommend.

We really, really like the ATI Radeon HD 4870. It offers unheard of performance for the price and is certainly a significant improvement over the HD 3870. So much do we like this card, in fact, that it runs away with our top, Editor's Choice, award.
