With superb speed, support for three monitors, and DirectX 11 capability, the ATI Radeon HD 5870 redefines the graphics card leading edge.

To us, it sounds like AMD is serious about being the leader in new gaming technology, at least on the GPU side of things. AMD has been driving forth the point that the ATI Radeon HD 5870 is a gamers’ video card; it makes no excuses for that.

HotHardware‘s review Edit

The new Radeon HD 5870 proved to be an excellent performer throughout our entire battery of tests. In comparison to other single-GPU powered cards, the Radeon HD 5870 is clearly and unquestionably the most powerful released to date. The Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 285 never really came close to competing with the Radeon HD 5870, regardless of the benchmark or game, or resolution tested.

ExtremeTech‘s review Edit

There's never been another video card quite like the ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity6 Edition—and we're not sure whether that's a good or a bad thing. The card demonstrates how small changes can make big differences—in the way you work with your computer, or even how you organize your desk space or cords. Those six Mini DisplayPort jacks on the back of the card force you to rethink everything you think you know about hooking up displays (and possibly rethink your budget as well). If you're willing to put up with the time payout, and put down what may be a hefty cash payout, you'll certainly have a work- or playstation like almost no one else's.

The new AMD Radeon HD 5870 is the fastest single-GPU graphics card you can purchase today and will likely remain that way through at least the end of the year. AMD is obviously confident in the products appeal to consumers with BOTH performance and features and is hoping that it adds up to better profitability for their new flagship offering. For my money, the Radeon HD 5870 is the best graphics card you can purchase; but for others the math might not add up.

Let me just say it: running triple Radeon HD 5870s in CrossFireX was a gaming experience that puts just about everything else to shame. I say "just about" because what I really still NEED to have is this power combined with three of these 2560x1600 panels to find the true gaming nirvana of legend. And, as I keep repeating, once Eyefinity and CrossFire can function simultaneously, triple Radeon HD 5870s may not seem like such overkill anymore.

First, we saw that performance scaling was dramatically different depending on the title and likely in each particular section of each game. In both Far Cry 2 and Resident Evil 5, the Eyefinity performance results were 2.5-3.5x SLOWER than our results using a single panel. Considering we are tripling the number of pixels that the single Radeon HD 5870 had to process, those numbers seem to make the most sense to us.

The Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition graphics card is aimed at a very specific type of gamer and to that end, AMD has succeeded. I was disappointed to see that the 2GB frame buffer offered so little in performance advantages over the 1GB card so recommending it over other HD 5870s is hard to do unless you really do want the freedom of 4+ monitors hooked up to a single GPU.

TechSpot‘s review Edit

Overall, the Radeon HD 5870 has proven to be a real winner, and possibly one the best graphics cards we have ever reviewed in this price point. It is the fastest single-GPU graphics card you can purchase today, the power consumption levels are excellent, and hopefully with better software support overclocking will improve as well.

TechSpot‘s review Edit

For the lower-end cards we find it harder to go past a pair of Radeon HD 5770 Crossfire graphics cards as they outpace contenders such as the GeForce GTX 470 and Radeon HD 5850. However for those seeking the ultimate high-end experience we highly recommend checking out a GeForce GTX 480 SLI setup. Even though the GeForce was faster, it's also more expensive and too power hungry, making it a less practical option. The Radeon HD 5870 on the other hand is almost as fast, it's a better value per dollar, and much more fuel efficient.

HEXUS‘s review Edit

ATI Radeon HD 5870 and HD 5850 represent solid advances in GPU technology. NVIDIA will need to bring excellence to every facet if it's to a launch a better-thought-out series of high-end GPU. Given a direct choice, we'd have the HD 5870 over the other two cards every day of the week: it's a fuller-featured single-GPU solution that's very strong in every area, and not just apt at producing high frame-rates.

Well, Sherlock, what do you expect me to say? AMD has succeeded in delivering the first DirectX 11 GPU by some number of months, perhaps more than just a few, depending on how quickly Nvidia can get its DX11 part to market. AMD has also managed to double its graphics and compute performance outright from one generation to the next, while ratcheting up image quality at the same time. The Radeon HD 5870 is the fastest GPU on the planet, with the best visual output, and the most compelling set of features. Yet it's still a mid-sized chip by GPU standards.

Tom's Hardware‘s review Edit

Without question, ATI once again wears the single-GPU performance crown, its Radeon HD 5870 effectively blending solid performance in today’s titles with the experience-oriented extras that’ll allow developers to create tomorrow’s games.

Today we're able to see the amount of work and effort ATI has put into the HD 5870. We can also see that they haven't created just a good card at launch that will become great over time, but a great card at launch that will probably become fantastic over time.
