AMD Athlon X2 7850 Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

The only sad part about this CPU is its user base will most likely never see the chip at its highest speeds. The chip has a suggested retail price of $69 USD, which means someone buying a new one will most likely buy a 780G or similar chipset. This means they will probably not have SB750. Despite that I was still able to acheive 3 ghz, which is probably a good thing for those new to overclocking. This took no voltage increase, which is always a good thing, and with SB750 I can only expect to go a lot higher. The AMD X2 7850 BE is really a capable CPU with an almost unbeatable price that saves on the wallet, but still provides plenty of performance

Everyone considering building a nice gaming machine has now the optimal duo to do so. Couple this CPU with an HD 4770 and you can easily build a rig with decent performance for under €400. So for the low budget customer we can recommend the AMD 7x50 series despite its high power-consumption We simply like the price / performance ratio.

If you're upgrading an AM2-based PC with a sub-2.0GHz processor, either chip will provide a marked performance increase. If you're building a new PC, there's little to choose between these two and Intel's Pentium Dual-Core E5200. Given current concerns over energy usage and pricing, though, we'd probably opt for an Intel-based PC.

The 2.8GHz Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition is a capable budget processor for everyday tasks, and even high-end gaming when paired with a powerful graphics card. But the older 65nm manufacturing process is beginning to show its age.

Unfortunately for the 7850 Black Edition, you get virtually the same core performance and identical overclocking headroom from the Athlon X2 7750 Black Edition - you're best off keeping the £13 difference in your pocket because the price premium just isn't worth it.

While the Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition didn't top our performance charts, it did put up a decent fight. It's more than sufficient for a typical home or office PC, and will even function well in a gaming PC. More demanding users, though, may want to look into the Phenom II X3 series or Intel's high end Core 2 Duos.
