AMD Athlon II X2 250 Pro Reviews

extremeoverclocking‘s review Edit

Both the Phenom II X2 550 & Athlon II 250 seem very capable dual core chips. Intel has had dual core 45nm processors out for a long time but even those have always held a price premium. Hopefully as we see more of AMD's dual core 45nm chips trickle out Intel will step up their game and drop prices. Maybe Intel will will also enable more features on their Pentium Dual-Core chips to match what AMD is offering.

If you're looking to spend less than $100 on a new AMD CPU upgrade, the Athlon II X2 250 is a very easy choice. It's power-efficient, cool, inexpensive and has enough CPU horsepower and overclocking potential to let you keep up with today's desktop applications.

So for the low budget customer we can recommend the new AMD dual-core series even with a higher power-consumption compared to Intel but closer then previous models. Especially the Phenom II 550 is a fierce competition for Intel but both CPUs deserve our Top Value Award.

A quick and inexpensive processor with good power efficiency, but it's outdone by others in the range.

TechSpot‘s review Edit

Overall we really liked the Phenom II X2 550 processor as an alternative to the Intel Core 2 Duo series. Then the Athlon II X2 250 does what it needs to in order to compete with similar priced Intel processors, but with such a small price gap, there is no reason why you shouldn't pick the faster Phenom II X2 instead.

xbitlabs‘s review Edit

Athlon II X2 certainly has a few drawbacks compared with Phenom II X2. These processors are based on their own semiconductor die called Regor that has no L3 cache. As a result, Athlon II X2 runs slower in a number of applications.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

If you need a basic PC processor for casual computing, you could do a lot worse than the AMD Athlon II X2 250. In fact, if all you want to do is browse the web, edit a few documents and watch some video, there's little reason to pay more. The more demands you make of this chip, the less convincing it is. But the biggest problem is the fact that, for around £15 more, you can grab a cheap quad-core chip that's much more adept at media encoding and other CPU-intensive applications. Adequate in isolation, this dual-core chip looks poor value next to cheaper quad-core models.

All in all, we think the Athlon II X2 250 is a very good and price-competitive CPU that is well worth considering if you're building a PC on a tight budget.

benchmarkreviews‘s review Edit

The Athlon II X2 250 performed well against our collection of test processors. Looking at the results, I'd say it's a definite improvement over the reigning Athlon X2 7850. It even surpassed the Intel C2D E7400 in a few benchmarks, despite having no L3 cache compared to the Phenom II X2 550. It seems the decision to include 2 MB of L2 cache has helped offset this a bit.
