With AM3 Phenom IIs just around the corner it is tough to say how popular the Phenom II X4 940 & X4 920 chips will be since they are only AM2+ compatible. For people with existing AM2+ systems that want a boost, then an X4 940 or X4 920 would be the way to go. People wanting to build new systems might hold off to wait and see what AM3 processors and motherboards will be priced at (and the performance difference).

Let's also not forget about the Phenom II X4 920, which should sell for just $230. At that price this Phenom II CPU is competing with the Core 2 Quad Q8300, a processor that it should be able to outclass in terms of performance.

Nevertheless, we are extremely pleased with the results demonstrated by Phenom II X4 920. Although it didn’t outperform the similarly priced Core 2 Quad dramatically, we can’t say that it yields a lot to its rival, either. And it means that AMD has every chance to become quite popular among overclocking fans due to their new 45nm processors.

Unless Intel drops its price to win favour on the Q9550 and Q9450/Q9400, when the original Phenom X4s launched, AMD's CPUs will be good value. We'd obviously still love to see a cut down £100, or even £150 Phenom II X4 do a large overclock on air: but for now ~£200-£250 still isn't a huge ask for a competitive CPU that doesn't use a whole lot of power (until overclocked and heavily overvolted).
