Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955 Pro Reviews

mbreview‘s review Edit

Overall, if you’re in the market for an upgrade I’d have to say to stick it out for “Conroe” variants if at all possible. The Extreme Edition 955 is the fastest Intel processor we’ve handled to date, and when paired with a proper graphics setup there’s no doubt that Intel has closed the gap between itself and rival AMD. In our case, we were limited to the gains we saw thanks to an “older” graphics processor. If you’re looking to upgrade now, and want one of the fastest processors available, then by all means give the Extreme Edition 955 a good, long look.

The Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955 processor performed extremely well in the majority of our quick benchmark suite out running the first quad-logical core processor, the Intel Pentium XE 840 CPU. The Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955 processor brings a new level of performance to Intel's desktop products and ups the ante on performance in heavily multi-tasked environments. The Pentium 955 may really add to something greater than the sum of its parts.

HEXUS‘s review Edit

The Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955, then, adds in a faster core speed allied to a faster FSB. Other improvements come in the form of a smaller manufacturing process and more L2 cache than has been seen on any consumer-level CPU to date. The Intel Extreme Edition 955 is a mighty fast, overclockable CPU that's out of the reach for most punters.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

You can opt for the Pentium XE 955 and easily overclock it to match a 965 processor. While that's not going to save you much, it is sufficient to cover the cost of obtaining a better CPU cooler, which would allow you to hit even higher speeds. The results we've obtained indicate that it might be more worthwhile to invest the extra hundred bucks for the Pentium XE 965 than the 955 model.

xbitlabs‘s review Edit

Pentium Extreme Edition 955 (Presler) processor left a very favorable impression. Especially against the background of its less successful predecessor – Pentium Extreme Edition 840 based on the 90nm Smithfield core. Pentium Extreme Edition 955 is not an eternal loser in the dual-core duel anymore. There are a lot of applications where Pentium Extreme Edition 955 managed to defeat AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+, the top dual-core solution from Intel’s competitor.

So the Presler is a powerhouse and the best Extreme edition yet, but as ever the verdict remains the same. We wouldn’t buy one over other Intel CPUs as its far from great value for money and AMD still rules for gaming. But if you have to have the best that Intel has to offer for the desktop, then the new Extreme Edition delivers.
