The Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 965 is a showcase of just how effective a couple of Cedar Mill cores and lots of cache can be when allied to a relatively high clockspeed. The '965 takes the '955 Edition as a base and extends performance by running a higher multiplier. What's more, Intel's '965 overclocks a touch better, in percentage terms, than AMD's 'FX-60, making the overall purchasing decision that much more difficult.

Lucky for Intel, their latest addition to the Pentium XE lineup, the 965 processor fared much better thanks to its extreme clock speeds. The results we've obtained indicate that it might be more worthwhile to invest the extra hundred bucks for the Pentium XE 965 than the 955 model. While there were a couple of benchmarks and scenarios where the Pentium XE 965 excelled, AMD's processors still had the better overall balanced performance especially because they fared strongly in the gaming domain.

So, Pentium Extreme Edition 965 will hardly affect the situation in the today’s processor market. Everyone is already waiting impatiently on the new Intel CPUs aka Conroe that are due to the market in late summer. As a result, the launch of Pentium Extreme Edition 965 will hardly create any significant stir in the gaming enthusiast community.

The Intel Extreme Edition 965 is a fast processor and is a good note for NetBurst to leave on. However, at £700, this is an amazing amount of money to pay for a processor. With Conroe just around the corner, it would be a large investment in what will soon become outdated technology. This point alone should be enough to make hold on to your cash.
