GALAXY GeForce GTX 660 Ti GC 3GB Pro Reviews

hardocp‘s review Edit

The GALAXY GeForce GTX 660 Ti GC 3GB video card is simply a great value. Reference clocked 2GB GTX 660 Ti video cards will start at $299. Custom video cards will go up from there. The GALAXY 660 Ti GC 3GB is an extra $40, but what you get is a highly overclocked video card out of the box. This extra boost in clock speed has provided better performance and higher playable settings that match the GeForce GTX 670 when you look at actual gameplay experiences. The GALAXY 660 Ti GC also offers 3GB of video RAM versus 2GB on standard models. While this doesn't have any impact on performance in a single-card solution in our testing, it should help with SLI. The GTX 660 Ti supports SLI and 3-Way SLI, so you can actually run three GTX 660 Ti's in your system. In that kind of configuration, 3GB will have its advantages, especially in NV Surround resolutions. The GALAXY GTX 660 Ti GC is very forward looking in terms of performance down the upgrade path should you be keeping your SLI options open. The best part about the overclocked GALAXY GTX 660 Ti GC is that you save $60 and receive the same gameplay experience as a GeForce GTX 670! The GeForce GTX 660 Ti GPU is very powerful for its price class. We were able to run most of our games up to 2560x1600 resolution with the highest in-game settings available. This makes it a worthy card for any single display. If you are gaming at 1080p you can be rest assured that you will get the highest in-game settings with at least 4X AA or FXAA in today's games with phenomenal performance.

Our overclocking across the board gave the GALAXY GTX 660 Ti GC 3GB video card a positive gameplay experience improvement. With the GPU and memory clock speed both overclocked we achieved performance that was faster than a stock GeForce GTX 670. Therefore, GTX 670 performance can be achieved, you just have to overclock both the GPU and the memory as much as possible. We were surprised to see up to 10% increase in performance over the GTX 670. In all instances the overclocked GALAXY GTX 660 Ti GC 3GB video card blew the stock Radeon HD 7950 out of the water. Overclocking the 660 Ti GPU was a positive experience. We found ourselves easily able to play every game in our lineup at 2560x1600 when the card was overclocked. This is an incredible feat considering the price point of the GALAXY GTX 660 Ti GC 3GB is $339.99. (Currently the "reference" GTX 670 will cost you around $400.00.) Beyond that, we found excellent performance at 1920x1080 (1080p) with 4X MSAA enabled in each game. GALAXY has done a great job improving the XtremeTuner Plus overclocking software. This new version finally provides a working on-screen display and controls that make sense. We found the application easy to use, with our only gripe being that the font size and frequency size could be larger. We had no problems with the software and it allowed us to take this video card to high overclocks at 1.3GHz. Until we evaluate other GTX 660 Ti based video cards we don't know if this is an average overclock or a great one. Standing on its own this overclock on the GALAXY GTX 660 Ti GC 3GB video card seems like it would be one of the top ones out there. It gets us past the GTX 670 hump, and we only seem to get 1.3GHz on high quality enthusiast cards, at least in the GTX 670 and 680 series. Given the overclock, and everything else we summarized in our original evaluation, we continue to hold on to our conclusion that this video card has earned our highest award. This stellar overclocked gaming performance backs up what a great video card the GALAXY GeForce GTX 660 Ti GC 3GB is.

We are once again impressed with the GALAXY GeForce GTX 660 Ti GC 3GB video cards. We already knew it had stellar single-card performance, but now that we have paired it up with SLI, its true potential has been shown. We discovered no memory bus bottlenecks and gameplay was great with three displays at 5760x1200. Our overclock even granted us between 10-17% extra performance, which was welcomed. We are glad there is a $20 rebate for these cards right now, there certainly needed to be given AMD’s recent clock and driver advances. Various models of the Radeon HD 7950 can currently be purchased from $279 after $20 MIR, to $379 after $20 MIR. As things sit today, NVIDIA needs to bring down the GTX 660 Ti 3GB price even more, we'd like to see these cards at $299, which would make these a very solid value. EVGA does have one 3GB GTX 660 Ti at $299.99 after $20 MIR. The Radeon HD 7950's current pricing gives the GTX 660 Ti some hard competition. As it is, two GALAXY GTX 660 Ti's together will cost $640 and that buys you a gameplay experience way superior to a highly clocked GTX 680, and competes neck-to-neck with Radeon HD 7950 CrossFireX in framerate and surpasses it in overall gameplay smoothness. If you are in the market for a solid SLI experience, the GALAXY GeForce GTX 660 Ti GC 3GB can offer that to you, and is quite capable in a multiple display gaming solution. In the single card arena however, the Radeon HD 7950 has edged out NVIDIA’s GTX 660 Ti solution showing the Radeon as a better value. All in all, it is hard to argue purchasing two GeForce GTX 680 cards at $1000 for SLI when the $640 3GB equipped GeForce GT X 660 Ti SLI has shown to be so capable, even at multi-display resolutions.
