Cooler Master Storm Sonuz Pro Reviews

hardwarebbq‘s review Edit

Ok so maybe this headphone wouldn’t be my first recommendation for music or movies. I don’t know if there was a problem with the review sample, but vocals just seemed off and a bit harsh. I haven’t seen any other review online mention this issue so its possible there was some issue with the sample we received. However CM has designed this headphone for gamers and for them I can wholeheartedly recommend this headphone for anyone not wanting a 5.1 channel headphone for gaming. Whatever game I played, the Sonuz gave a great and enjoyable performance and the plus point being that the Sonuz can be enjoyed on onboard audio as well though getting a dedicated Sound card is always recommended. Adding to the gaming performance is the solid build that all the CM headphones I have tested my share and I really would like to know how a computer peripheral company like CM can make such comfortable headphones like the Sirus and Sonuz which top tier headphone brands like Sennheiser, AKG and Audio Technica have plenty of uncomfortable headphones.

The CM Storm Sonuz is a 2.0 stereo headset with great sound and powerful bass, suitable to those on a budget or users who don’t care about having a 5.1 surround sound model. The peripheral is huge and a bit clunky; it takes up a great deal of desktop space because it’s not bendable. However, the robust design doesn’t mean it’s uncomfortable; the ear rests easily inside the big ear cups. The microphone could have been more flexible.

CM Storm's Sonuz is a good headset for the price and is, for the casual FFA gamer, close to perfect with stock configurations. The sound stage is coherent and makes it quite easy to tell from where an enemy is coming. It is, in fact, better than the 5.1 ROCCAT Kave headset we tested a while ago. The bass is a bit over-emphasized with the stock foam inside the ear cups, and removing the foam brightens up the headset, allowing you to tweak the sound to your liking. The headset also responds well to equalizing, which will allow you to dial it in for your favorite games. The CS Storm Sonuz is one of the most comfortable headsets we have come across in a long time. It is light, has generous padding, and stays in place even if you shake your head violently. CM Storm almost nails comfort perfectly with this headset, if it were not for the slightly too shallow pads.

Although Cooler Master doesn't have a long history of making audio hardware, its CM Storm range of gaming headsets have quickly proved to be strong contenders in a crowded marketplace. The CM Storm Sonuz has the same chunky looks as the rest of the range - making yourself look like a cyborg is de rigeur when wearing a gaming headset.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

CM Storm has missed a good few tricks from rival manufacturers, and the Sonuz lacks anything distinct to shout about, beyond its detachable mic arm. Although we've harped on about it like it pumps hydrochloric acid into your ears, it's important to clarify that the Sonuz is a solid and functional set of cans, and feels unlikely to break any time soon. But when you're browsing the market and find Creative's Tactic 3D Alpha for just over £40 and Corsair's Vengeance 1300 for under £60, you'd be a fool to opt for this instead.

Overall I don't have too many complaints about the CM Storm Sonuz headset. The sound quality is pretty good for a gaming headset but it is by no means audiophile grade. They feel well-built and the adjustability of the microphone is perfect. The short length of the wires requires you to either plug them into the front of your computer or use an extension cable, which is something I'd like to have seen included with the headset from the start. The inline volume and microphone control came in very handy and didn't exhibit any odd behavior or noises when adjusting. So there you have it. The CM Storm Sonuz is a pretty good headset at a reasonable price: $69.99. There are cheaper headsets that sound almost as good and there are more expensive headsets that sound better. These fall right in the middle of the pack in terms of sound quality. The microphone is flawless and the ability to move it to either side is quite nice. I think my only real complaints here are that this headset is definitely only designed for larger sized heads and the bass response could be a bit better. Around the $70 price point there are a lot of options (no less than 58 results on Newegg between $50 and $75) and I think you're best off trying a few of them on at a brick and mortar store before committing to any of them, but the CM Storm Sonuz should definitely be on your list of headsets to try on.

benchmarkreviews‘s review Edit

Based on the product alone, CM Storm Sonuz delivers more than most other headsets on the market. However, when the sale price is taken into consideration it's not easy to justify the extra cost. Large 53mm drivers are rare on headphones/headsets, just as much as a detachable boom microphone, so if these are features that consumers value then the price is within reasonable reach. Obviously there are dozens of options also available if you're willing to sacrifice sound quality, which cost less.
