Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 Pro Reviews

ExtremeTech‘s review Edit

This time around, we find ourselves liking the QX6850. But we also recognize that it's going to have a limited lifespan, with the new Penryn products arriving on the scene in a few months. For now, the Intel Core 2 QX6850 is the king of the desktop CPUs.

www.pcper.com‘s review Edit

The new Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 processor is easily the fastest and most powerful consumer processor we have seen here at PC Perspective. It's new 1333 MHz front-side bus, 3.0 GHz clock speed and quad-cores make it the top end CPU to beat and it will probably remain planted on the performance crown until the end of the year. Intel's commanding performance and price cuts are putting more and more pressure on AMD's CPU team...

HEXUS‘s review Edit

So the results are in and Intel is not just sitting at the top of the performance tree but standing up there and waving. The Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 pulverises AMD's fastest single-socket processor. Okay, the QX6850 extends this lead - though only by the odd percentage, nothing revolutionary - but it's extremely expensive and a processor that few people can justify buying.

TechSpot‘s review Edit

First of all the Core 2 Extreme QX6850 does have a thermal design rating of 130 watt, just like the QX6700. However while benchmarking this new quad-core processor we noticed that it ran extremely hot at all times. Heat is not the only concern we have with the Core 2 Extreme QX6850, as the $999 price tag is also very extreme. We are already accustomed to Intel jacking up the price of their most prized processors, but that won't keep us from saying that at that price the QX6850 is not flawless enough to justify purchasing.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

As for the Core 2 Extreme QX6850, it delivers good performance on applications that are designed for SMP and multi-threading like 3D and graphics rendering applications as well as other multimedia content creation programs. It's a pity that we didn't really note better performance as a result of the increased FSB, but the net performance is still decent nevertheless.

xbitlabs‘s review Edit

Especially since Core 2 Extreme QX6850 has no competitors that could get at least close to it in terms of performance. Core 2 Extreme QX6850 is based on this particular processor stepping and can be a great choice for overclocking enthusiasts. Therefore, the only drawback of the newcomer is its relatively high price reaching $1,000.

HotHardware‘s review Edit

Intel's new Core 2 Extreme QX6850 offered performance gains on the order of about 2 to sometimes as much as 13%, depending on the application and CPU / chipset combination. Applications and tests that made heavier use of multi-threading, like our Sony Vegas test, showed significant gains, while others that relied mainly on overall system bandwidth tended to show a more modest benefit. Overall though, according to our test findings, it's safe to say that the Core 2 Extreme QX6850 is the fastest desktop processor on the market currently.

tweaktown‘s review Edit

Our best advice is to use the new 1333MHz FSB CPU as there are no performance hits over the older 1066MHz versions, and with the increased bus speed the Core 2 Quad has much more breathing space to be able to perform to the best of its capabilities.

computershopper‘s review Edit

Though it's costly and few applications can yet push it to its limits, the Intel QX6850 delivers performance bragging rights as the fastest CPU for desktop PCs available today.
