Toshiba Qosmio X770-136 Pro Reviews

I can’t go onto anything else without first mentioning the obvious elephant in the room - the price. At over £1700 this is a very expensive piece of kit. Gaming laptops are an expensive breed anyway, but the Qosmio X770-136 really takes the biscuit. Compared to Alienware, which are traditionally thought of as being overpriced, an almost identical specification laptop is over £300 less costly. At £1700, with Alienware you get a much higher specification laptop including the superior GTX580M graphics card. Even Toshiba’s own X770-11C is almost £300 cheaper and appears to be identical in pretty much every aspect except that it has a Blu-ray re-writer drive, whereas the model reviewed here only has a Blu-ray playback drive, so, on the face of it, your £300 less buys you a superior machine. I really can’t see the point of this model. Yes, you get a quad core i7 CPU and 8GB of RAM but then so do all the others at this price point; and in may cases they include a better CPU. It won’t play the latest games such as Battlefield 3 in even medium settings and you can forget about playing them in 3D at the full 1920 x 1080 resolution. Yes, you can lower the in-game resolution and the quality settings, but should you really have to for £1700?

The X770’s bright and crisp screen displays some quality 3D effects, via the bundled Nvidia active shutter glasses. 3D gaming does slow down the frame rates achieved, but the Qosmio has enough graphical firepower, to ensure an immersive and relatively fluid experience with the likes of Battlefield 3. Toshiba has produced a good looking and well-featured laptop here, with that rather lofty price tag and poor battery life, being the only real sticking points.
