Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Edition Pro Reviews

Fudzilla‘s review Edit

Intel i7 975 is without a doubt the fastest desktop CPU in the world. The new stepping did not help to reduce the massive power requirements, but it was enough to maintain the title of the fastest CPU around. Overclocking is a bit disappointing as it is in the range of an Phenom II, but of course Intel does charge a fortune for their premium CPUs. The CPU is already available for about €860,- in Euroland, and about $1000 in US.

motherboards‘s review Edit

Intel has taken the performance crown from itself again with the launch of the Core i7 975 XE CPU. This CPU is the fastest available processor for the gaming enthusiast on the market with 8 logical cores running at 3.33GHz. If you have the $1000 this CPU will set you back laying around and a system to put it on (X58 motherboard, HD 4890 video card or similar, DDR3 3GB and fast HDDs), this CPU will really help your system shine.

ITreviews‘s review Edit

We cannot recommend the Core i7 975 Extreme due to its ridiculous price, but the new version D0 silicon is a definite improvement over C0. Happily there are alternatives to the 975 Extreme and we are very impressed by the new version of Core i7 920.

www.pcper.com‘s review Edit

Thousand dollar processors aren’t for everyone, or even for most, but if you want what is without a doubt the world’s fastest desktop processor, the new Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Edition is the one you want. The Core i7-975 obviously does best in those applications and scenarios where thread counts at 4 or higher can be utilized; that is when the quad-core HyperThreaded cores really get the job done.

HEXUS‘s review Edit

It's taken Intel almost seven months to change the Core i7 line-up, and it's now headed by the 975 Extreme Edition, which is, for the most part, a faster-clocked version of the incumbent 965 Extreme Edition. We like to see companies push the performance envelope and there's none faster than the Intel Core i7 975 EE, if you can afford it.

xbitlabs‘s review Edit

According to our tests, the graphics card being the same, the performance of the platform with an Intel Core i7-975 EE processor can be 10 to 30% higher than that of the platform with an Intel Core i5-750. But with the current prices, buying a Core i5-750 for $200 instead of a Core i7-975 EE for $650-800 will save you about $400 or more which you can spend for a Radeon HD 5850/5870 or even GeForce GTX 480.

HotHardware‘s review Edit

Nevertheless, when you get right down to it, the new Intel Core i7 975 Extreme Edition is quite simply the fastest X86 desktop processor on the market right now. You can't find a faster CPU from any manufacturer on any desktop platform, or whether you consider yourself a "PC" or a Mac, for that matter. What does that say of Intel's seemingly omnipotent new processor line-up? You just have to hand it to them. Enthusiasts and Average Joes alike can attest - Intel is simply "killing it" right now and the Core i7 975 Extreme Edition, though pricey to be sure, is the fastest desktop chip money can buy. What else needs to be said? As we've echoed many times over the years, the numbers speak for themselves.

Tom's Hardware‘s review Edit

For the folks who buy tier-one boxes and have no interest in touching their nuts and bolts, the appeal of these new chips is clear. But that isn’t me, and it’s probably not you either. I don’t have any problem recommending Core i7 over Phenom II right now.

tweaktown‘s review Edit

The i7 975 is a nice CPU and one that will fit nicely at the top of the Intel i7 line-up. The performance in rendering was very impressive and cannot be overlooked, but in the end if you are doing media encoding or are a gamer there is not much to be had with this CPU.

hardwarecanucks‘s review Edit

You will be buying the best performing retail processor available on the market today. You will have the pleasure of an unlocked CPU multiplier that can only be found on Extreme Edition processors from Intel. And you will be in a great position to really push things with sub ambient cooling...but the price tag comes with no guarantees.

Intel’s new Core i7 speed king is only a bit faster than its predecessor, but no AMD processor even comes close—in performance or price.

bit-tech‘s review Edit

Nonetheless, the 975 EE is a fairly underwhelming Extreme Edition. We'd have hoped that it would add at least two multiplier stops over the 965 EE rather than just one - that would've given us a 3.46GHz CPU, and we could've at least written 'the 975 EE is noticeably faster than the 965 EE' rather than just 'a bit faster'.

Intel has given the Core i7 family a buff and wax with the new D0 Stepping, and the reduction in power draw is deeply impressive.
