GIGABYTE GV-R777D5-1GD Pro Reviews

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

Unless you’re really strapped for cash, the Gigabyte HD 7770 OC is a better card. The superior specifications and improved fan are well worth the extra, and the Gigabyte HD 7770 OC offers quite playable game framerates in today’s titles, just as long as you aren’t expecting fireworks – you’ll still need to spend £250 or more for strong frame rates in titles like Crysis. The 6850 remains a slightly faster bet if you can find it, although the difference is marginal, and the 7770 OC’s architecture may well see it improving slightly in future games. As a value prospect, the Gigabyte HD 7770 OC is an excellent little card.

The Gigabyte GV-777OC-1GD is a perfectly mediocre video card. It's small enough to fit into cramped cases, and it only requires one power connector. It has an effective cooling solution which doesn't make much noise. It has the same features found on every other Radeon HD 7770, such as DirectX 11.1 support, PCI-E Gen 3 support, and Eyefinity 2.0 support. It couldn't keep up with the reference Radeon HD 6870, and the GeForce GTX 560 Ti outpaced it by a considerable margin in every test. The only real advantage the GV-777OC-1GD has over its competitors is that it uses a lot less power than the GeForce GTX 560 Ti, and a little bit less than the Radeon HD 6870. If power usage is a big issue for you, the Gigabyte GV-777OC-1GD is a good choice if you just have to have something from the latest generation. If that's you, TigerDirect will hook you up for $159.99. If not, you are likely to be able to find more compelling options out there.

Based on 28nm fab process, the HD 7770 is certainly a good mid-range card that runs games well at 1920x1080 resolution. No matter which manufacturer users ended up buying the card from, the performance difference will be small, even with a factory overclock. Based on what we have seen, most factory overclocked cards will run about 10% faster than the reference speed, which translates to 5~10% gain in games. In fact, if the money difference is not that great, buying a factory overclocked HD 7770 is definitely worth it as the extra overclocking puts the card’s overall performance equal or better than the HD 6850. In dual configuration mode, the HD 7770 scales quite well. Depending on the games, we get about a 70~100% gain in performance with the second card. This puts the cards faster than the GTX 480 and close to the GTX 580. The fact that this card can get such great performance while consuming 50 watts fewer is quite nice. In addition, dual HD 7770 definitely outperforms a single HD 6850 while running much quieter and with lower power consumption.

AMD's new Radeon HD 7770 delivers a substantial improvement over the previous generation HD 5770. The HD 6770 was just a HD 5770 with a "6770" sticker slapped on it, so the upgrade has been overdue. Averaged over all our testing we see more than 20% higher performance from the reference clocked HD 7770 vs. the HD 5770. This puts the HD 7770 on the same performance level as NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 460, or a bit below the HD 6850.We have seen great overclocking potential from the AMD HD 7900 Series, and the HD 7700 Series is just like it. Overclocking the cards well beyond 1 GHz is quite easy. We reached between 1140 and 1180 MHz on the cards tested today. Memory overclocks well, too, resulting in a total real-life performance improvement of about 15%.AMD's new generation of graphics processors has great power consumption: below 70W during typical gaming is a first for this performance class. Idle power consumption is also down, at 7 Watts now, which is great for users who spend most of their time with productivity and rarely game. Overall performance per Watt is leading our charts, only to be bested by AMD's other card released today, the HD 7750.

The Gigabyte Radeon HD 7770 OC is a very well designed video card that features a custom PCB, GPU cooler and is factory overclocked to seal the deal.
