Olympus SZ-14 Pro Reviews

PhotographyBLOG‘s review Edit

Like last year’s SZ-30 model with also supported a big focal range, the largest draw here however remains the fact that in terms of lenses the SZ-14 fields a veritable whopper at 24x, and for a price that is identical to that usually charged models with a comparatively miserly 5x optical zoom reach. While for value the Olympus SZ-14 cannot be faulted the scroll wheel implementation for us removes a large part of its allure, which is a real shame. If you can live with this, or don’t change shooting settings very often if ever, then in most other respects this affordable Olympus travel zoom is a real winner for everyday casual snapping.

A massive 24x zoom and an extremely competitive price, but the sensor doesn't pull its weight and image quality suffers

www.whatdigitalcamera.com‘s review Edit

The Olympus SZ-14 has few demerits the worst being the lack of a grippy surface (present on other SZs), the 720P HD movies could be improved when looking across the competition and high sensitivity image noise is irksome at best and makes them almost unusable at worst. Nevertheless, the SZ-14 produces decent image quality (at low ISOs) has a good set of snapping features and at under £200 makes it a awful lot of camera for the money.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

Although there may be a few issues that could be improved upon, such as the non-standard USB interface and the iESP metering system's propensity for overexposure, the Olympus SZ-14 still represents good value for the price. Point and shoot photographers will love the easy to use interface, selection of automatic scene modes and 'Magic' creative effects, whereas more experienced photographers may wish to look further up the Olympus range for a camera with a little more manual control. For the price, the range of features and quality of images delivered are about right, making this camera an interesting choice for those after a compact camera for their travels.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

The 14 megapixel, 24x optical zoom Olympus SZ-14 has the double whammy of a broad focal range yet a value-added price tag with which to sell itself, and it largely succeeds on both points. It’s much the same as the previously reviewed SP-620UZ in terms of its feature set, but provides a slightly longer zoom in a more compact body for just £20 more. Perfect for beginners, it may not set the world alight but it does the job of offering plenty of picture-taking opportunities from the one "all-in" device, and at a very reasonable price. It won’t turn you into an award-winning pro, but if it’s casual holiday snapping you’re after, equipped with the SZ-14 you can’t go far wrong.

ephotozine‘s review Edit

The Olympus SZ-14 boasts a remarkable amount of optical zoom for a camera which you can carry around in your pocket. Negatives of note are the lack of rubber grip on the front of the camera which is found on other SZ models, movies are restricted to 720p HD and noise is significant at ISO 800 and 1600. Despite this, the SZ-14 has decent image quality and is available for a very reasonable price.
