A well-equipped TV, but the addition of PenTouch means it's not particularly good value

Although it’s far from perfect, the 50PZ850 is a credible 3D and HD performer - though it’s not so hot with standard definition 2D. However, it’s still hard to recommend this TV wholeheartedly to 3D and HD fans because of the simple fact that part of its price is used to buy LG’s new PenTouch functionality - a feature which is to our mind the most hare-brained thing we’ve seen added to a TV in many a long year.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

There are things to like about the 50PZ850. Its picture performance with HD is in many ways very good, and it's a relief to find that its 3D pictures are far less troubled by crosstalk than those of some of LG's cheaper active 3D TV plasma models. It's a very easy TV to use, too. Ultimately, though, a series of seemingly rather careless flaws, a lack of LG's Smart TV service and a headline feature that's no use to man nor beast mean the 50PZ850T can ultimately only earn a very cautious rather than whole-hearted recommendation.

At its core the Pentouch idea is all about educating young kids, most of whom, in our experience, seem to expect touchscreens on any electronic device, but do we really want sticky fingers marching towards our TVs? Perhaps not, but this is a nice implementation of next-gen tech could catch-on among families looking for their next TV. It could give the ailing plasma tech a lift, too, but LG's Pentouch isn't yet responsive enough to give architects and other professionals a touch-feely future.

The LG 50PZ850 has some excellent attributes and is capable of producing some very nice images but there is a feeling that useless features such as Pentouch are distracting the manufacturer from the task of making better TVs.
