Its feature list is unparalleled, particularly at this price, and it's supported by stellar AV performance, terrific build quality and lightning-quick disc loading. For these reasons it's arguably an all-round better player than the Pioneer BDP-LX52 or the Panasonic DMP-BD80, which is really saying something.

The BDP-831's excellent detail retrieval is demonstrated by the precisely rendered textures of skin and walls. It picks up all the pockmarks in The Joker's patchy white make-up and the shadow detail on Bruce Wayne's T-shirt. The only let-down is the picture noise that can be seen fizzing in blue skies and other backgrounds, which the noise reduction modes seem powerless to stop.

The Oppo BDP-83 stands as yet another excellent Blu-ray Disc player for those who haven't yet made the jump into High Definition to consider. The price tag is higher than similar players from larger manufacturers, but Oppo's player has the distinctions of being faster and more user friendly, being compatible with SACD and DVD Audio discs, and being able to tackle 1080i content better than almost anything.

Finally, here’s a standalone Blu-ray player that truly offers the complete experience. The BDP-83 is a reference video and audio transport regardless of the format you throw at it. But it’s also the most user-friendly standalone player I’ve had the pleasure of using. While some players provide outstanding performance in certain areas, the Oppo never hiccupped in any department. It’s truly the most complete package of a Blu-ray player I’ve yet reviewed.
