HP EX490 MediaSmart servers Pro Reviews

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

HP has made great improvements with the MediaSmart EX495 device based on Windows Home Server, enough so that it's easy to overlook the minor irritations.

Whether it’s Sonos, PS3, Xbox 360 or any other media streamer, the HP will almost certainly work with it. The software can be used to automatically update the NAS, create and edit regular computer back-ups, and find and organise your media. Add remote access via web browser and iPhone/Touch (courtesy of a free app), and you’ve got a complete package. The HP’s not cheap, but it is clever.

The EX495 has upgradability, lots of features, and speedy performance, but a lengthy installation process, software bugs, and a high price mar this otherwise excellent media server.

HP has managed to make a great networked storage system even better. The HP MediaSmart Server EX495 is an excellent storage device for enthusiasts, but also for small businesses. The support for Mac computers has become fairly complete and covers the most important aspects: huge storage, easy file access and Time Machine compatibility. Beyond the backup and restore, the MediaSmart Server also knows how to entertain: thanks to its beefier processor, it can compress video files twice as fast so that you can stream content to your phone or laptop more comfortably.

reghardware‘s review Edit

It is not the cheapest four-bay NAS product on the market, though, and it is a long way from being the most affordable 1TB media server. Home entertainment enthusiasts ought to be able to get their kicks for less elsewhere. But for small businesses, or indeed home-based businesses that need to combine media functions, £399 for an expandable HP-branded server strikes me as terrific value for money.

MacNN‘s review Edit

The integrated dual-core, 64-bit Pentium E5200 CPU brings hardware performance on par with a variety of desktop computers. The additional processor capabilities would not be necessary if the device was just a storage device, but the speed definitely helps with many of the advanced features such as video conversion.

CrunchGear‘s review Edit

The HP MediaSmart EX495 is a quality rig. I don’t have anything against the system besides the aforementioned pricing. If you don’t mind paying a premium for software, buy it without hesitation.
