U.S. Cellular has made a good choice bringing the Pantech Verse onboard to target those looking for a phone that lets them communicate quickly and often, without requiring a data plan. The Verse's strengths are in its hardware -- the responsive QWERTY keyboard, the physical design, and the shortcut keys. Other features, like the camera lens, the small headset jack, and the more limited battery capacity, seem like afterthoughts. Much slower data speeds (think of it as 2.5G) will keep you from accruing costly charges too quickly. That said, the charges do accumulate, so take care when firing up Opera Mini.

I've no problem with basic phones, so take a minute to read this before you call me a smartphone snob. Indeed, basic phones are very appropriate for people who just want to text and talk, maybe snap a photo or listen to tunes, and avoid a data plan. The trouble here is that the Pantech Jest 2 isn't a very good basic phone. If it had a bigger keyboard and better call quality, I'd be all over it. But for now, I'd recommend other Verizon options.

The Pantech Jest 2 on Verizon Wireless is no longer a bad joke like the first model, but it's still not appealing unless your needs are very modest.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit Like Unlike

The Jest 2's only appeal is as a world phone, but if you're shelling out for a global plan, it's surely worth considering something quite a bit more modern than this relic. In the end, the real jest is that this phone is even on the market in 2012.
