Sony Walkman NWZ-A866 Pro Reviews

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

If you’re in the market for a diminutive MP3 player, the Sony Walkman NWZ-A866 is a solid choice. Bluetooth, FM radio and the excellent screen for video viewing make it an unobtrusive but nattily-featured portable entertainer.

It's hard to imagine a more elegant MP3 player, and the A866 beats the iPod Touch for sound quality and fuss-free music transfers. However, Sony is making a bold statement by charging just as much as the 32GB iPod touch - and we're not completely convinced it pulls off the coup.

Like the original, it’s great for music on the move… but it can be beaten for value

If you're keen on video, then you might be better off paying an extra £20 and settling for an iPod Touch. But as many will argue, Apple's media players could sound better. Indeed, the Sony NWZ-A866 delivers a quality output, along with a user-friendly design and, overall, is is a great little music player. Although some will bemoan its incomplete format support, as pocket PMPs go, it has a lot going for it.

For the same price as a 32GB iPod Touch, the Sony Walkman NWZ-A866 is an excellent alternative for those who are not interested in apps or web browsing. It's also worth noting that a 16GB version is available for a much cheaper £149 and should provide enough storage for many people's music collections.

The Sony NWZ-A866 is an extremely likeable device. It looks and feels great, offers an interface slicker than just about everything but an iPod Touch, and packs-in more quirky features than any other MP3 player we've tested of late. It sounds good too, thanks to the decent bundled earphones and a more-than-capable sound engine at its core. However, at £220 the expenditure is a bit wince-inducing, especially when the 16GB NWZ-A865 sells for as much as £90 less.
