D-Link Boxee Box Pro Reviews

reghardware‘s review Edit

As a player for local media, Boxee excels – but so it should, for £200, when there are products that can do as well for half the price. For UK users, the IP TV functionality really isn’t good or broad enough to justify the extra price.

HotHardware‘s review Edit

Since we received our evaluation system back in early January, Boxee has released a number of small updates to the platform that have either enhanced the user experience in some way or added new services like HDX movies from Vudu and the Netflix app. So far, if you're an early adopter and took the plunge on a Boxee Box, you're probably pretty happy with the decision you made. For that we applaud Boxee and along with their best-of-class HD media streamer, the Boxee Box, we have zero reservations chalking them up for an Editor's Choice here at Hot Hardware.

ITreviews‘s review Edit

D-Link's Boxee Box has plenty going for it. It's easy to set up, provides quick and easy access to a wide range of popular TV shows and comes in a neat little package. With support for a wide range of formats, it also works well as a media streamer for viewing content stored on your local network. It isn't perfect, though - and the links to video-on-demand sites such as BBC iPlayer could do with being streamlined. It's also a little on the expensive side.

The Boxee Box is a great idea, but we found it far too hard to use, and the problems with adult filtering mean that we can't recommend it.

The Boxee box is remarkable in many ways: from its design to its overall performance, it is a device that holds a lot of potential. It has a nicely designed user interface, it can be extended by apps/channels and it plays a ton of popular file formats. What else could you ask for? Right now, content. The premium content is a little scarce and we really wished that it could talk to a cable/sat box. But things should get better in a n imminent future when Netflix and Vudu appear on the Boxee Box. It will then feature one of the most popular streaming service (already available everywhere else…) and a great video-on-demand service. And with Hulu on the horizon, the final package would pack a lot of punch.

MacNN‘s review Edit

Yet as much might need to get better, we have a hard time giving the Boxee anything less than three and a half stars both for what it can do and what it should do in the future. Of all the companies working on developing a wide-ranging digital media hub, Boxee has come closest to getting what people want: an easy to use, multi-talented device whose goal is to digest media wherever it comes from. Once the range of deals with Hulu, Netflix and others come in, it could well be the ultimate solution short of a home theater PC. For now, at least, it's the yin to Apple's yang: what it lacks in paid media it makes up for in free media, and that's all some might need to hear.

Engadget‘s review Edit

Boxee says it wants to do major updates twice a year with "many, many" small updates in between, so we're certain many of these issues will be dealt with -- and the content deals feel almost inevitable, given the Boxee team's undeniable charm. Until then, however, we're still waiting for the TV revolution to finally arrive.

A feature-packed and versatile media streamer, but bugs and glitches mar the experience.

Overall, the Boxee promises to be a great addition to a connected home—once it implements all of its premium service offerings and fixes the bugs. I like the petite, two-sided remote (although a backlight would have been nice for the keyboard side), and the interface is one of the best I’ve seen.

Overall, the Boxee Box by D-Link promises to be a great addition to a connected home - once it implements all of its premium service offerings and fixes the bugs. I like the petite, two-sided remote, and the interface is one of the best I've seen. If you want a full-blown Web browser that you can access while watching, then you might prefer to wait and pay an extra £100 or so for the Logitech/Google box when you can purchase it in the UK; Boxee is not set up to work with your existing TV service and requires its own HDMI port. And I wish it were a bit peppier in accessing content. But for user-friendly access to a wide selection of paid and free content, both on the Web and within your own local-area network, a fully-baked Boxee may well be the polyhedron you've been waiting for.

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

Less expensive than the Logitech Revue with Google TV and pricier than Apple TV, the Boxee Box by D-Link focuses on rounding up Web content on your HDTV, but suffers from a lack of partner content at launch.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

However, the above is also a blessing, because it shows us what the Boxee Box really can be. When the bugs are ironed out and even more content is available, this will be the media streamer to beat – not least because the hardware is terrific. But it comes at a price. And that price is, very sadly, far too much – especially when you consider just how annoyed the software will make you.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

The success here is the ability for the Boxee Box to play any file you can throw at it in 1080p, giving you considerably more power than Apple’s Apple TV offering. Then there is the VPN support for American TV fans and the ability to stream content from the likes of Channel 4, BBC and others - with more and more players scheduled to come on as more roll out - and finally the ability to enjoy those silly or thought-provoking movies your mates are sharing via Twitter and Facebook.

LAPTOP Magazine‘s review Edit

Overall, the $199 Boxee Box delivers more apps and content (both online and locally) than the more affordable Apple TV and Roku XDS (both $99), but it also adds a layer of complexity, especially when you have to interface with the browser.

Gizmodo‘s review Edit

The only people I would recommend the Boxee box to is someone who torrents a lot of shows and movies and needs one box to play back all the various formats. Everyone else, whether they're looking for a good way to play video, or to stream Netflix, or to get Pandora on their TVs, have many more choices to out there, most of which are cheaper. If Boxee can secure solid deals for Hulu, Fancast, Netflix, Amazon and other video providers, this would be a solid box, but until then, it's just a really good way to watch pirated videos.

www.trustedreviews.com‘s review Edit

It may be overpriced, but the Boxee Box has unparalleled codec support, a slick UI and looks fantastic sitting under your TV. The fact Boxee has committed to regular firmware updates also means it should keep improving while third party app support is second to none. iTunes fans may prefer the Apple TV and those on a budget may be better off with the WD TV Live Hub, but we'd find the extra cash and spend it on the Boxee Box.

It supports tons of file formats and has access to hundreds of online services, but playback can stall and a couple of bugs prevent it from getting top marks.
