Pocket-lint‘s review Edit Like Unlike

Great for movies though lacking the brightness of rival brands' Edge LED-backlit offerings, Sony's 37-incher piles on the features. A lush Freeview HD treatment, awesome online goodies, and a nice price are set against some onscreen blur, and a lack of ultimate HD detail, but this budget TV nevertheless punches above its weight.

Sony's 37EX524 is a solid enough performer with unusually cinematic pictures thanks to an excellent black level response performance that humbles many much more expensive edge LED TVs. However, ultimately some motion resolution issues and a slightly muted overall light output make it a considered rather than 'must buy' purchase for picture enthusiasts. Its real selling point, provided it's something you're interested in, is its superb Bravia Internet Video online service, which offers considerably more interesting video streaming content - much of it free - than any rival 'smart TV' platform.

If you can accommodate the 37EX524 in a reasonably dark room, or an environment where you can at least reduce light levels heavily when watching anything ‘serious’, then it’s capable of producing some impressively cinematic, contrast-rich images free of edge LED’s usual backlight clouding pain. We’re also big fans of Sony’s Bravia Internet Video online service, and its price seems fair for what’s on offer. Just bear in mind that its slight lack of dynamism versus many LED models could make it feel rather muted for a bright living room, and that the lack of any serious motion processing can leave pictures looking rather soft, even when watching HD.
