Toshiba REGZA 47VL863 Pro Reviews

reghardware‘s review Edit

The 47VL863 may not hit every ball out of the park - its media streaming capabilities are basic, and Toshiba Places needs work - but its HD picture quality and family friendly 3D tech make this a genuine mid-range contender. Well worth auditioning.

On balance, this 47-inch Toshiba can be considered a class act. It’s handsome and capable of an extremely refined 2D Full HD performance. While there’s still work to be done to get the Places smart hub fit for habitation, and media streaming struggles beyond local USB playback, we ended up rather liking the set’s eminently practical Passive 3D performance. There’s still work to be done repairing the brand’s Easy A reputation, but this set is definitely a step in the right direction.

hdtvtest‘s review Edit

The Toshiba 47VL863B is a competitively priced 3D HDTV, the most unique selling point of which is its implementation of the passive 3D system, which has many advantages (and unfortunately, the one large disadvantage of lessened resolution) when compared to the more common active 3D method. What stops us from more heartily recommending it is its weak contrast performance. Blacks on the Toshiba 47VL863B never appear truly deep, instead having a greyness which we’re not used to seeing on modern displays. For this reason, we especially don’t recommend that users who are into watching films at night (or in similarly darkened rooms) consider the Toshiba 47VL863B.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

The set's contrast issues stop me giving it a whole-hearted recommendation. However, its 3D pictures are fun and friendly, and there are times when its 2D images look very nice, too. And it's cheaper than LG's 47LW550T equivalent.

Some edge LED flaws when showing dark scenes in 2D stop the 47VL863B from being anything more than a solid 2D performer. Also, while there’s potential in the new Toshiba Places ‘smart TV’ system, right now it’s rather off the pace compared with what some rivals are doing in the online TV arena. However, the 47VL863B’s bright, breezy and respectable 3D performance ensures that it’s a set that anyone after a moderately priced, family friendly, big-screen 3D TV really should at least put on their audition list.
