The Razer Tiamat 7.1 Gaming Headset is far from entry-level. It’s not even moderate to mainstream. This units sits at the bleeding edge of uber-enthusiast with a familiar price point, handsome feature set and absolutely canorous performance.

We tested the Razer Tiamat with a variety of PC titles including Diablo III, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Battlefield 3 and while the 7.1-channel audio couldn't really compare to a surround sound speaker setup, it was the best 7.1-channel experience we've experienced with a headset.

In the end, I think that the Tiamat 7.1 edge goes beyond its audio quality: it’s the industrial design – the whole package. The sad reality is that most people don’t really discern the differences in terms of sound “quality” (between “very good” and “great”), and those who can hear the difference aren’t really well served by reading a review anyway – they need to try it for themselves (which is what I ultimately recommend). Also, to answer our original question: I’m not convinced that the Tiamat 7.1 can give you that big if an edge when enemies come from behind, but it does make the games more immersive. My take on the Tiamat 7.1 headset is that it is a formidable headset design, which is functional, nice, and aggressive (as in “badass”) at the same time. The connectivity options and the overall ease of use and comfort is as important, or even more important, than a (slight) improvement of sound quality alone (I’m assuming that none of the competitors sound “horrible”, but again, I haven’t tried them all).

The Razer Tiamat 7.1 is an excellent-sounding gaming headset with plenty of bass, and while it's pricey for a wired headset, it's one of the best we've seen yet.
