Canon PowerShot SD980 IS Pro Reviews

expertreviews‘s review Edit

Image quality isn't the best, but the touchscreen, wide-angle lens, HD video mode and HDMI output justify the high price.

The IXUS 200 IS is beautiful and chic to look at but sometimes sacrifices practical concerns for that stylishness. The new touch-screen technology, though, performs impressively and you can also record 720p HD movies.

DigitalCameraReview‘s review Edit

What the PowerShot SD980 IS does best is show off. Flipping through images with a swipe of the LCD or a flick of the wrist is sure to please a small crowd of friends and family. However, no camera is going to inspire any real "wow" factor if the images don't look as good as the interface. The SD980 delivers dependable image quality whether or not you choose to utilize the touch screen.

reghardware‘s review Edit

While some touch-based functions – such as touch focus and scene selection – are great to use, others – like image delete and tagging – are clumsy. Surely, Canon could have made more of the touch technology. The lack of manual control and a mid-resolution screen are a let down on a camera costing more than £300. Indeed, the Ixus 200 IS is really an ordinary camera with an extraordinary interface. Stylish looks apart, we think Canon can do rather better than this.

ephotozine‘s review Edit

Throughout the test, the camera suffered badly from noise and has a problem with colour fringing. For the happy snapper that enjoys the unique features of the touchscreen and the flipping to looking at images in playback, this camera will provide a novel approach to picture taking and viewing. Apart from the noise issue, the camera is pretty fast, takes sharp pictures and is responsive.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

The Canon IXUS 200 IS is a great camera. You can all - but forget the touchscreen – it's a nice luxury, but there are other reasons to like it. It takes great pictures and we're in love with the body – comfortable to hold and reassuringly weighty, it feels like you've got a lot for your money. Image quality is absolutely top-notch. A few more manual features wouldn't go amiss, but we're willing to trade them off for the gorgeous body and excellent pictures.

The Imaging Resource‘s review Edit

No doubt about it, combining the Canon Digital ELPH name with LCD touchscreen technology is a powerful combination all by itself. But throw in a 12.1-megapixel CCD, powerful DIGIC 4 processor, 5x optical zoom lens with image stabilization, and you get the very capable PowerShot SD980 IS. With an ultra-compact size, limited controls to worry about, and overall good exposure and color, the Canon SD980 IS offers great quality in its tiny package.

The snazzy touchscreen, wide-angle lens and HD video appeal, but at this price we expected more in terms of performance and functionality.

Camera Labs‘s review Edit

The Canon Digital IXUS 200 IS / PowerShot SD980 IS is the first Canon compact to feature a touch-screen LCD panel. This is the feature that everyone will be talking about and it provides the camera with one very useful feature - quick and simple manual focusing - all you have to do is point where you want it to focus and it's done. Beyond that, the touch-screen's utility is, well, let's say arguable.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

Apart from some fiddly controls the IXUS 200 IS is very nice to use and the active screen technology is great, particularly when selecting the focus point on the screen or the vertical shutter trigger. Image quality and movie picture quality is excellent and so, overall, the Canon IXUS 200 IS should be high on your list possible cameras to buy if you're in the market for a compact such as this.

Steve's Digicams‘s review Edit

Standing out from the rest of the Digital ELPH line is the PowerShot SD980 IS, sporting a unique 24-120mm wide optical zoom lens and Canon's first Touch LCD screen. Although we would like to see a little more purpose for the Touch LCD screen, it is a great ultra-compact camera loaded with all the latest features.

Some fantastic technology, but it isn’t quite mature enough for mass consumption yet

Ultimately the Canon Digital IXUS 200 IS does all that's expected of it, the pebble inspired design you'll either like or you won't, and if it was £50-£100 cheaper any niggles would be largely by the by.

LetsGoDigital‘s review Edit

We really like the Canon Digital IXUS 200 IS camera. Even for a DSLR photographer, it is a pleasure to carry around a camera without constantly being aware of it in your pocket. The ease of taking a picture and the fun of operating the camera contribute to the overall positive feeling we have about the IXUS 200 IS. And if you do want more, or if you consider yourself to be a creative photographer getting the most out of his camera, you should go for a DSLR. Although I still can't think of one reason to not carry the Canon IXUS 200 IS with you as a second camera!

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

Canon's first touch-screen point-and-shoot camera, the PowerShot SD980 IS masters the touch-screen shooting experience, but some wide-angle image-quality issues hold it back from true greatness.

The Canon PowerShot SD980 IS is a very good touch-screen camera for those on the fence about using a touch-screen camera.
