D-Link DIR-657 Pro Reviews

itreviews‘s review Edit

Its performance is solid rather than stellar, although the DIR-657 does have some useful advanced features for those with more complex networking needs. But in the end, the price is just a little too high for what’s on offer.

As I said at the top, there is a lot of obfuscation in the wireless routing market thanks to the marketeers whose job it is to get you to pluck their product off the shelf. I hope D-Link can improve the DIR-657's performance via firmware, because it's certainly not one I'd recommend you pick up. If you want a better performing D-Link router, I'd go for the DHP-1320 Wireless N PowerLine Router. You'll get much better wireless performance for about the same money, and the start of a HomePlug AV powerline network. You really should be exploring powerline anyway as a way to expand your network without running cable instead of mucking around with wireless repeaters and extenders!

www.trustedreviews.com‘s review Edit

In an age of HD video and Cloud computing, the limitations of 802.11n continue to haunt all manufacturers of home wireless equipment. D-Link has attempted to teach the old dog new tricks, but unfortunately with the DIR-657 it has chosen the wrong ones. The omission of dual band means wireless performance is not up to scratch and consequently no amount of clever traffic prioritisation technology can fix it. Furthermore while we'd like to recommend the DIR-657 based on its slick software and good looks, its asking price is sky high. We get what D-Link was trying to achieve, but unless the first firmware updates can pull off miracles next time we'd like more substance with the style.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

While the DIR-657 is a solid router, with a well-designed interface and most technology and settings you’d need, its performance is slightly below par. There’s no possibility of using a 5GHz wireless network for a possible speed boost either. We certainly liked this router for its appearance and clear labelling, but not its performance. Cheaper routers such as TP-Links’ TL-WR1043ND may not look as good, but it outperformed the DIR-657 by a wide margin at both short and long range.

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

D-Link's DIR-657 HD Media Router 1000 is marketed as a router built for multimedia streaming, but lower-than-average throughput will disqualify it for high-definition streaming for many users.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

The good-looking D-Link HD Media Router 1000 DIR-657 is a very good router, though it doesn't offer much over the company's previous model, the DIR-655.
