ephotozine‘s review Edit

This 50mm macro from Sigma is a very capable lens for the price and should make a good introduction to macro photography, especailly for those on a budget.

www.whatdigitalcamera.com‘s review Edit

The Sigma impresses with a very small minimum aperture, allowing plenty of depth of field, but test charts show it to not be the sharpest lens in comparison with some of its peers. Performance is adequate, with best results at f/11, before the mean MTF results begin to dip. Chromatic aberration results are very good at the centre of the frame with moderate fringing occurring at the corner of the frame. A good budget lens with reasonable if not stunning performance

slrgear‘s review Edit

As its name reveals, the Sigma50mm f/2.8 Macro stands out in this six-lens 50mm shootout as the only lens offering Macro capability. Additionally, it delivers sharp (both center and corner) photos over quite a large aperture range f/2.8-22, with little shading and almost zero distortion. It does exhibit mild chromatic aberration. If you don't need anything more than an f/2.8 maximum aperture, this is clearly an excellent buy.

PhotoRadar‘s review Edit

Many film lenses struggle to turn in decent-looking results when fitted to a digital camera, but not this one. Its resolution, when tested on an EOS 400D body, was excellent. There’s some slight softness at the frame edges at f2.8, but this clears up by f5.6. The centre definition is very good indeed, even at f2.8. With no visible distortion and only the faintest traces of chromatic aberration near the edges, this is an extremely good lens...
