Sony VPL-HW30ES Pro Reviews

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

The Sony VPL-HW30ES is an impressively capable 1080p projector for both 2D and 3D, but finding the best settings for it can take some time and effort.

There’s no doubt the VPL-HW30ES is a terrific performer for the money. Finally, we have a rival to worry JVC’s DLA-X3.

I like the natural look of the image on movie content, and also consider the projector to be a bit forgiving on lower quality content. That Sony VW90ES was last year's flagship Sony projector. Previous Sony home theater projectors have proven popular. It often isn't apparent to our visitors. As they are, per Sony, only sold by authorized local dealers, they aren't as visible online as many projectors that are sold online. Certainly, there aren't any dealer ads to keep the Sony name in the forefront of consumers minds when learning about projectors online. Sony, for example, has never advertised with us, so, other than the usual few reviews a year, they are fairly invisible on our site. No matter!

I’ve long since passed the point where I look back nostalgically and yearn for the image quality of those classic CRT projectors. But the fact that even a sub-$4,000 projector can keep us from pining for those good old days is more than just news; it’s a revelation. 2012 promises to be a more than interesting year for such projectors, and the Sony VPLHW30ES is poised to pounce on the pride. Only time—and an opportunity to see competing models from Panasonic, Epson, and JVC—might cull out a leader. But if there’s a candidate that can do 2D and 3D better than this one at anything close to the price, it’ll have to do awfully well. You’ll read about it here when it happens.

Cinema-quality 3D effects and stunning 2D images make this the best home cinema projector we’ve seen this year – but the price makes it only for serious film fans.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

The Big S has delivered a barnstorming big-screen projector with the VPL-HW30ES. Not only is it good enough to convert the fiercest 3D cynics, it's also a darn fine 2D projector in its own right. While it may not be perfect – the lack of a 12V trigger particularly rankles and we'd rather the transmitter was back integrated with the lens assembly – this remains a compelling argument for bringing big-screen 3D home.

AVForums‘s review Edit

So, as with almost every display out there the Sony HW30ES has some strong plus points with a good 2D image and very good 3D performance but with some issues with the colour balance and colour gamut performance. It is great to see that Sony have finally managed to get their 3D images up to the same standard as the competition out there and also offer strong black levels and good contrast.

Sony has worked wonders with the HW30ES, erasing the disappointments of the VW90ES from our minds with a projector that serves up a classy, hugely watchable and best of all impressively affordable big-screen 3D - and 2D - feast.

ProjectorCentral‘s review Edit

The VPL-HW30ES is a major milestone for Sony. Not only have they improved upon one of their best projectors in recent memory, they have done so without significantly raising the price. The end result is one of the least expensive 3D 1080p projectors currently on the market. While the CEDIA expo is right around the corner and this fall's new offerings will rearrange the playing field in interesting ways, right now the HW30ES has three things going for it: it has an attractive, engaging high-quality picture, a comparatively low price at the moment, and it's available now. It's hard to argue with that.
