The UE40D6530 is a well-equipped Smart TV bolstered by an excellent 2D hi-def performance. For movies and sports fans, it won't disappoint. Not every feature hits the bullseye – 3D suffers from crosstalk double-imaging and media streaming across the network is flawed – but overall this is a well priced, high-performance screen.

At an online price of around £800, the Samsung UE40D6530 presents very good value for money and, in 2D, produces deep, involving, accurate, high contrast video with an absolutely beautiful slim design. Surprisingly, the screen uniformity is very good for an edge LED-backlit LCD TV. As such, we would rather think of this as an excellent 2D HDTV, and just forget about its poor attempt at 3D. Were it to be more expensive, we wouldn’t be so lenient, but given the price the D6530 can be had for, and its other strengths, we don’t think it’s too unreasonable to write the 3D mode off as an experiment gone wrong (although Samsung should revisit the “Full HD 3D” label associated with this 3DTV, because it just isn’t true).

Overall, the 40D6530 should be considered something of a star performer for the price. Its images are enticing, it looks as pretty as a picture and the feature set hits all the hot buttons. Isn’t love wonderful?

Picture quality is on a par with the more competent screens on test. As a pure 2D TV, the Samsung has very few peers. With 3D content the 40D6530 struggles.

  Overall, this mainstream LED looker hits far more than it misses. It’s a refined 40in Freeview HD TV with very agreeable hi-def picture quality. Throw in access to Samsung’s burgeoning VOD and apps portal, plus the option of 3D and the UE40D6530 begins to look like a decidedly smart buying choice.

Under the right conditions, the 40D6530 can produce pictures good enough to make you purr like the most pampered of cats. Its design is sublime too, and it delivers a likable if not state of the art 3D performance. Throw in ample multimedia talents, moreover, and you’ve got a TV that does an awful lot for its surprisingly affordable price. However, we can’t quite bring ourselves to give it an unconditional rave on account of its minor crosstalk and middling backlight issues.
