Too much choice can be paralysing: it can be hard to take the plunge and hand over a hefty bundle of notes. But we think being able to pay anything between £300 and £3000 for a 40in TV is a good thing, as it tends to mean decent value. This Sony is a case in point, offering everything that you could want in a TV except 3D. (Or everything you could want in a TV, as some wiseacres might say.) A Freeview HD tuner, bags of internet TV content (including Sony’s Qriocity service), four HDMIs, USB, DLNA media streaming, Full HD… Sony has ticked plenty of boxes.

Overall the KDL-40EX524 is a very capable display that offers both an accurate image with an impressive array of features. The greyscale is excellent both out-of-the-box and after calibration and whilst the display lacks a Colour Management System (CMS), the out-of-the-box colour performance is reasonably accurate and thankfully free of any over saturation. The video processing also proved to be very capable and as a result the KDL-40EX524 was able to produce images that were pleasing for both standard and high definition content.

Overall, I’d rate the 40EX524 as a stylish, everyman telly with a forward looking feature roster. As such, it bodes well for other screens in Sony’s 2011 line. While more demanding users should look up the Sony range for better picture quality, I suspect regular folk will find plenty to like here.

Overall, I rate the EX524 as a solid mainstream TV. While it may lack the visual finesse of models further up the Sony range, it does offer a great feature spread, with welcome eco credentials and excellent net connectivity.
