Sensibly - in our view - sticking to active shutter 3D while the slow trickle to the less impressive passive 3D tech continues, Samsung is quickly becoming as known for its good value 3D plasma as it is for its impossibly slim LED TVs. It's sculpted another stunner with the Samsung PS51D8000, and although Smart Hub could do with debugging and super-charging, this is an easy to use TV with all the latest features - and a cracking 3D performance.

At just 4cm deep and with that luxurious bezel and pedestal, the Samsung PS51D8000 will attract more envious stares than most other sets. As with its £710 stablemate, the Samsung PS51D495, the D8000 is a 51in panel. Given its price tag it’s no surprise you get Full HD, as well as extra features such as the company’s new Real Black Filter, Cinema Smooth motion tech and 3D Sound.

While the PS51D8000’s 3D pictures aren’t perfect, they’re still well above average by the standards of the 3D world at large. As such, they join with its terrific 2D picture quality and some well rounded, potent audio in making the PS51D8000 an almost ridiculously good value proposition for the discerning buyer.

The Korean company still has work to do, but things are now at the stage where the PS51D8000 is a viable alternative for Plasma buyers who aren’t being served by Panasonic. Its combination of judder-free motion, good Greyscale tracking, perfect colour reproduction, class-leading motion performance, fairly quick video gaming responsiveness, and full resolution 3D display, earns it a highly recommended rating.

Overall the PS51D8000 is a very competent plasma that is both attractive to look at and capable of producing an excellent image, especially in 2D. In addition the 3D performance is good and the Smart TV platform is excellent so if you're looking for a good all round performer we'd recommend giving this display a demo.
