Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR Pro Reviews

shutterbug‘s review Edit

The 85mm VR Micro Nikkor ($529.95, MSRP) benefits from next-generation VR II technology and is stated to deliver usable results at up to four steps below the optimum shutter speed. Keep in mind that we’re dealing with a DX-dedicated lens for an APS-C sensor camera (like my D300). So the optimum shutter speed when shooting handheld and without VR on translates into 1/(Lens Focal Length x Sensor Factor), or 1⁄85mm x 1.5, or 1⁄125 sec (rounded off). (Because this is a DX lens and this is Nikon, the multiplication factor is 1.5, so the effective focal length is approximately 128mm.)

ephotozine‘s review Edit

Nikon's latest Micro Nikkor optic strikes a good compromise. It is a lens packed with the latest technology and features, but at a price that is really quite reasonable. Although the performance of this lens may not be up with the best of Nikon's macro optics, it is certainly good enough to satisfy most photographers, especially if used at optimum apertures with care. Overall it is a good value, lightweight macro companion for DX format camera owners.

Best of all, the lens is moderately priced, so if you're into macro photography and have no plans to move on to a FX camera soon, this is certainly one of the lenses to consider.

slrgear‘s review Edit

On its own merits, the Nikon 85mm ƒ/3.5 micro is a good lens; it shows a slight defect in the top left corner that could be distinct to just this sample. Apart from that, it's a sharp lens, especially when stopped down to ƒ/8 or smaller, and the addition of VR is very useful. The overall population of macro lenses in this focal length is becoming quite large, and compared to other lenses in the category, I'm not sure if there is any one feature which would make this lens a must-buy.
