Nikon AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Pro Reviews

photozone‘s review Edit

On paper the Nikkor 80-400 VR is a rather attractive lens, combining a wide zoom range with a long maximum focal length and optical stabilization. However, both in the lab and in the field the design shows its age.

slrgear‘s review Edit

We were a little surprised that this lens wasn't sharper at 400mm than it was, but it does a great job of reaching way out there, amounting to a 160-600mm equivalent zoom on a DX-sensor DSLR. Combined with an effective VR system, this would make a great "walking around" lens for the nature photographer. (600mm equivalent, image-stabilized, in a lens this small? - Crazy! - And loads of fun!)

ephotozine‘s review Edit

Nikon appear to be in the middle of revamping their line of professional quality lenses at present, and I would imagine this focal range will be high on their list.

Shutterbug‘s review Edit

Although most advanced photographers use a tripod when possible, some subjects and situations call for a handheld camera. Examples include sports where full mobility is required, candid shots of people, birds in flight, and even indoor photography where flash or tripod is prohibited. Of course, there are also situations where carrying a tripod is less than practical, such as during long hikes or backpacking trips. And, anyone shooting from a boat, small airplane, or other unstable platform will find a tripod useless.
