So where does this leave us: is Nikon's new 10-24mm a better lens than the 12-24mm? Not really, for as previous comments have suggested the new lens simply offers Nikon users a different balance of price, aperture and zoom range.

Nikon has done well with its new ultra-wide angle zoom lens: it's a sharp lens, with corners that don't get significantly soft. CA performance is good, probably excellent on a D3, D300 or other Nikon body that employs CA reduction. Corner shading is a marginal factor, and distortion is typical of this class of lens. It may have taken Nikon a few years to get to the 10mm zoom party, but now that it's here, it's done very well.

Compared with the Canon lens, the zoom and focus rings on the Nikon feel a bit sticky and slightly lacking in smoothness. In other respects, however, build quality is pretty good and optical quality is enhanced by two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements, three aspherical elements and Nikon's SIC (super integrated coating), which aims to increase light transmission through the lens, while improving colour consistency and reducing flare.

Shutterbug‘s review Edit

After working with the lens for about a week I came to find it a most excellent companion for nature work and landscape photography, though I’m sure if I had worked with it in my usual haunts on the streets of New York City it would have been just as fun. Having always been a fan of wide-angle lenses and short-ratio zooms, I can say that this is one lens that would always find a welcome home in my camera bag.
