With its unspectacular spec sheet, the RX-V371 is a budget offering through and through, unlikely to attract the attention of home cinema enthusiasts. It lacks bells and whistles like USB ports, onscreen setup, networking and Dolby Pro Logic IIz – if that’s what you’re after, look higher up the range or check out Onkyo TX-NR609. The springclip terminals on the back are also disappointing. However, what the Yamaha RX-V371 does offer is a generous array of connections, 3D support, auto calibration and a wealth of sound processing tech – all of which should be more than enough to satisfy beginners.

The RX-V371 offers fewer Dolby and DTS surround modes in lieu of Yamaha's 17 DSP presets, though it does decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution (not DTS-HD Master Audio lossless). The LCD display does not indicate when it is decoding a Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD encoded disc, but the surround performance indicated to me it was decoding these tracks properly. Moreover, the 3D pass-through was flawless. As long as an AVR has HDMI 1.4, you're good to go, and with the lowest-priced AVRs providing this type of HDMI connection, it's pretty safe to say that virtually all newer AVRs these days are 3D compatible and shouldn't be a concern in your decision-making process.

Considering it costs less than £250, the RX-V371 has an impressive set of inputs and outputs, and its automatic calibration is an unexpected treat. However, the lack of an on-screen overlay can make advanced configuration a laborious task. Finding the right balance of frequencies and crossover points is important for a good home cinema setup, but doing so using the one-line LCD display is rather time consuming.
