The Sony BDP-S780 offers a wide selection of Internet-streamed entertainment, but makes some curious compromises. Its 3D settings can improve stereoscopic viewing. But the $230 price may be a painful trade-off for this model's capabilities.

£240 can buy an awful lot of functionality these days. Take this Sony BDP-S780: not only is it a player of 2D and 3D Blu-rays, DVDs, SACDs and CDs, but it also features wi-fi for connection to your home network, Skype and 2D-to-3D video upconversion. Your smartphone can be its remote control, thanks to Apple and Android apps, and it includes a stack of online functionality such as BBC iPlayer, LoveFilm and Sony’s recently restored Qriocity music’n’movie service. Not bad for a box less than 5cm tall.

The Sony BDP-S780 Blu-ray player takes its 3D imaging and Internet access seriously. But its shortcomings make it seem overpriced.

After going through all the features and setup options this Blu-ray player offers and really diving into the network functions, I can say that the Sony BDP-S780 would be a great addition to any home theater or video system that is in need for an upgrade to the latest in today’s tech. Does it play video games like the PS3, NO. Does it have the audiophile quality analog output stages like disc players from OPPO and DENON, NO. What it does very well is play Blu-Ray movies without a hitch, and offers more networking options than most people will ever really know what to do with. For that alone I recommend this player wholeheartedly. Skip paying the $100 or so on a network media player and go get this BDP-S780 and you’ll be adding the HD turbo charger your system really needs.
