Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Pro Reviews

ephotozine‘s review Edit

With the price being only £315, this lens is a cracking bargain for those looking for a very capable lens for portraiture that delivers excellent sharpness with low levels of chromatic aberrations and distortion. Also worth mentioning is the good build quality and fast auto focus speeds, making this a compelling choice if you are looking for a lens of this focal length to add to your collection.

Canon’s f/1.8 lens flies the flag for the more affordable end of the product range and turns in a very solid performance, suggesting that sub-£400 versions should not be dismissed even when set against four-figure rivals.

slrgear‘s review Edit

The Canon 85mm f/1.8 is an excellent buy, probably even a best buy. Unless you require the extra stop and the slightly better optical performance of the Canon 85mm f/1.2L, you might well be happy with the f/1.8 lens -- Not to mention the extra $1450 in your pocket! It does have rather soft corners when shooting wide open, particularly on a full-frame body, but as noted (perhaps to excess), this might actually be a benefit for portrait shooters. Stopped down slightly, it delivers very good performance for anyone, at a very good price.

photozone‘s review Edit

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is a very desirable lens and, surprisingly, a very affordable one. Both contrast and resolution are very good straight from the max. aperture. The lens shows some hefty vignetting at f/1.8 but beyond it's not really a big problem anymore. Neither distortions nor lateral CAs are something to worry about in field conditions. However, bokeh fringing (LoCAs) can be visible in some scenes and in extreme situations you may also spot some purple fringing. The build quality of the lens is very good and the AF performance leaves nothing to be desired.

The-Digital-Picture‘s review Edit

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens is relatively inexpensive but yields very good image quality. It is reasonably sharp wide open, but really shines from f/2.8 on. Wide open, vignetting will be apparent even on a 1.6x FOVCF body. Full frame body users will see some vignetting remaining at f/2.
