This functional webcam makes video chats look bright and crisp, thanks to a new low-light sensor with an extra software program. Still, we had a few minor crashes.

Microsofts LifeCam VX-5000 web chat functionality is top notch and has great color representation with little noise or artifacts. The packed software's picture quality is not as high as it could be, with lots of artifacts and heavy compression, but makes up for it in simplicity of use.

The fact that the word 'fun' is mentioned several times on the Microsoft LifeCam VX5000's specifications page should tell you all you need to know. This is a light, compact and easy to use webcam which doesn't go beyond the basics, but does those well. It's a shame that the cheap bundled software is aimed at 12-year olds.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit Like Unlike

It is a compact and smart looking little webcam that copes well with the demands of general webcam usage, from recording short internet videos, to chatting on Skype. Problems with the quality are pretty common to webcams and things are not so different here. But sadly we cannot recommend this for those on the move because of the frustrations with getting it stable on the lid of a notebook. It is fine if you are happy to have it on a desk, but if you want it at eyeline then things are not as stable as we’d like them to be.
