If you’re looking to save some money on a home cinema setup with the SP8600, don’t omit a dedicated speaker system. The built-in 3w mono speaker is underpowered and useless for watching movies. The good news is that we didn’t notice any fan noise – the SP8600 remained very quiet throughout our testing, even after several hours’ sustained use. Even at this price, it’s difficult to recommend the SP8600. It might have more inputs and outputs than more expensive projectors, but it can’t compete in terms of picture quality, particularly if you’re susceptible to the rainbow effect.

We've seen budget 1080p projectors before, but few are able to offer the level of quality and features required to go beyond mere resolution and deliver smooth life-like moving images. The InFocus SP8600 takes such tasks in its stride and is available for less than the Vivitek H1080FD upon which is it based. This is a truly excellent projector at the £799 asking price.

Don’t be put off by the little list of negatives we finished up with back there. The bottom line with the SP8600 is that even if it cost £1100 it would be a good projector. So for the measly sum of £800 - with a 5-year parts warranty, let’s not forget - it’s little short of incredible.
