Despite its age, Canon's 24-70mm f/2.8L is still able to hold its own, producing images with very good to excellent sharpness, especially in the centre of the frame. The price tag of just under £1000 seems very reasonable to me, especially as its a lens that's built to last. It should prove a worthwhile investment for any Canon user looking for a lens in this range.

Overall, there is little to fault about Canon’s EF 24-70mm in isolation but when compared against the brand-new Nikkor design it perhaps falls slightly behind in terms of both focusing speed and image quality.

Spending a lot of money on a lens isn't always a guarantee of good performance, but in the case of the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8, every penny of its price is more than justified.

The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens is an impressively high performing zoom lens. I regard it as one of the best general purpose lenses available and for the same reasons, it is one of the most-professionally-used Canon lenses. The 24-70 L is as good as it gets in this focal length range...
