Pentax Optio RS1500 Pro Reviews

itreviews‘s review Edit

Aimed at the younger generation, this thoroughly affordable RS1500 manages respectable stills and video - especially in VGA quality - outside, but isn't up to scratch in low light. Its likability is also hampered by an LCD screen that just doesn't show in enough detail what the camera is seeing, causing unexpected out-of-focus shots in poor light - and a crisis of confidence in this otherwise impressive 'my first camera'.

PhotographyBLOG‘s review Edit

The Pentax Optio RS1500's sensor captures colours well and if it wasn't for the digital noise issue, the pictures would be great. As it happens, excellent pictures viewed at a normal distance look a lot worse viewed close up. Saying that the type of user for this camera is unlikely to blow the pictures up to anything beyond 5x7 when printing with the exception of the occasional enlargement for families or friends. With that in mind, it's actually OK, but why are Pentax risking customers not enlarging prints? It will boil down to cost: an inferior sensor will keep the production costs down meaning the RS1500 can be offered for less than £100.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

With a wealth of compact cameras to choose from, and some great performers for your money, the real appeal of the Pentax Optio RS1500 has to be the customisation option. It manages to escape being simply a novelty camera by virtue of its reasonable performance, but if performance is important to you, then perhaps forgoing the changeable covers for something more conventional would better suit your needs. The Pentax Optio RS1500 is likely to appeal to those who want to stand out, eschewing the typical black or silver camera body for something all the more personal. One thing is undeniable though: putting a DC superhero on the face of your camera will make people look at it, especially kids.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

Even for those not convinced by the Optio RS1500's headline novelty feature, the 3in LCD screen and use of lithium-ion batteries make it a welcome addition to a competitive market. It's an ideal point-and-shoot model for beginners.

DigitalCameraReview‘s review Edit

CONCLUSIONS In the final analysis the Pentax Optio RS1500 is a pretty good walking around camera. There are cheaper cameras that will perform just as well (or in some cases better) as an image capture device, but all will lack the RS1500's plethora of available "fashion" skins and some will lack the RS1500's HD movie mode. If you're looking for a decent small digital camera with a high customizability factor and HD movie capability, the RS1500 may be the digicam you've been searching for. If you are looking for a small and inexpensive point-and-shoot that will allow you to express your creativity through your images (rather than through your image capture device), you might be better off looking elsewhere.

ephotozine‘s review Edit

Apart from having customisable and changeable skins, the RS1500 doesn't boast many features and is quite a plain looking camera without a skin. The image quality is fantastic for a camera which can be purchased for less than £70, although images are quite noisy throughout the ISO range. The camera will certainly make an ideal gift for a child who is interested in taking their first steps into photography.

Not without problems, but serviceable photo and video quality, fun designs and a low price add up to an attractive deal.
