The Apple TV is a step in the right direction for networked media content in the home. The user interface and hardware build beats anything else we've seen, and what it does, it generally does very well. Of course we'd like to see a bigger hard drive, or at least support for adding an external drive, to reduce dependence on computers being left turned on with iTunes running.

If you just want a dead simple movie rental box and you're not that picky about content, the Apple TV is a no-brainer. If, like us, you're looking for options good enough to make you can the cable, Apple's new box still feels a lot like a hobby.

The Apple TV is not the only set-top box to integrate computer-hosted media with your lounge TV – but it is the easiest to use. It’s superbly made and crucially boasts a clear and simple interface. It’s a doddle to find anything you need with a simple six-button remote control.

The Apple TV is a very elegant solution to a sometimes difficult problem: getting all that media from your PC to your TV. If getting your music and iTunes videos to your TV where you can watch them more easily is what you are after, the Apple TV is a perfect device for you. If you are trying to get the latest technology and HD content from your PC to your TV, the Apple TV has a few hurdles you'll have to deal with including possible hacks or just waiting for Apple to start offering that content.
