It’s a shame Samsung’s Smart TV apps aren’t yet all present and correct, but the BD-D8500 is such a strongly specified slice of technology that it seems almost churlish to complain. Fine performance from the myriad functions, and at a far from eye-watering price, make this something of an eye-catcher.

The high price and heavyweight size will put many off, but this 3D Blu-ray player-cum-HDD recorder’s combination of unusual features make it a niche product extraordinaire. Top quality 3D is the icing on an enticing high-end package that marries BBC iPlayer and comprehensive digital file playback via USB or DLNA to Freeview HD and a huge hard disk. Aside from a few onscreen menu niggles, our main criticism is that only one channel can be recorded.

So with its excellent performance, packed feature list and fresh new GUI, the BD-D8500 is a fantastic proposition. Yes, Panasonic's forthcoming 3D BD recorders will offer archiving from the HDD to BD disc, which this one doesn't, but will they be as slick, or so temptingly priced?

All things considered, the BD-D8500 is a mind-blowing product. Few Blu-ray players can match its staggeringly generous range of features, which includes Freeview HD recording, built-in Wi-Fi, 3D playback and easy-to-use networking tools. Most impressive of all is Samsung’s new-look internet portal, which boasts more content and a friendlier layout than last year’s Internet@TV. Aside from this incredible feature list, the BD-D8500 provides excellent Blu-ray pictures, sports an attractive new GUI and a typically alluring external design.
