WD TV Live Media Player Pro Reviews

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

WD's tiny TV Live media streamer supports a wide range of popular formats and it can play them from directly-connected USB drives or from computers on a local network. It's a device that's easy to use and its remote is comfortable to work with. The main downside is that I had to wait for a firmware update for the streamer to work properly during my evaluation period.

A low-cost, versatile way to pipe media to your TV, but the interface cannot overcome the limitations of the remote control

ITreviews‘s review Edit

The WDTV Live is compact, powerful and extremely easy to use, offering excellent playback support for a wide range of digital media. It's not perfect, but the low price goes a long way towards compensating for its faults, and in this light it would be difficult not to offer it a hearty recommendation.

Nevertheless, we absolutely love the WDTV. While it does have its faults they’ll only affect a very small minority of users and for the most part the WDTV Live provides a superb media player experience. A slick and easy interface, unmatched format support and playback ability, easy access to networked media and completely silent operation set the WDTV Live convincingly apart from the competition. If you own a sizeable media collection then this should be treated as a near essential purchase.

If you don't already own an Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3 and are serious about networked streaming, the WD TV Live is probably one of your best choices for getting content to your TV.

CrunchGear‘s review Edit

Nonetheless, for $149.99 the WD TV Live HD Media Player is a highly capable and worthwhile addition to most anyone’s media center. One caveat: if you’ve already got a PS3 and/or XBOX 360 (I have neither), then you are probably one of the few who wouldn’t benefit much from the WD TV Live. In any case, with increases in speed, utility, and functionality, the WD TV Live is definitely a welcome addition to WD’s line of HD media players and a worthy successor to the original WD TV.

It may be compact, but it runs like a dream and crams in far more than its sub-£100 would suggest

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

Despite a few (mostly) minor drawbacks, the WD TV Live succeeds overall by offering a solid product and gets an extra point for the low price. Key areas such as format support, performance and usability offer distinct appeal and if future firmware updates can resolve some of the issues we had, it'll be up there with the WD TV as one of the most desirable devices of its type on the market.

The Western Digital WDTV Live is a worthy successor to the barnstorming original, adding support for networking and making playing your multimedia files on your TV easier than ever before. However, other devices on the market offer the same and better functionality for less money.

Maximum PC‘s review Edit

Like its predecessor, the WD TV Live doesn’t actually store any media. Plug portable hard drives filled with your movies, music, and photos into the player’s two USB ports and it’ll output the content to your home theater via either an HDMI, composite, or component video connection (also added since the original design).
