Synology DiskStation DS411slim Pro Reviews

xbitlabs‘s review Edit

The Synology DS411slim is a unique NAS. It combines compact dimensions with high performance and broad functionality. It’s a perfect choice if you want a small but functional NAS. And it is surely superior to homemade NAS systems. Size is the only factor that differentiates the DS411slim from its larger cousins. It features a high-performance platform and functional software. Synology is in fact a leader in terms of NAS software and keeps on improving. When writing this, we learned that the company had already released its beta firmware version 4.0. We’ll discuss it in an upcoming review. So, if you don’t need a large storage capacity (3.5-inch HDDs can offer 3 terabytes today whereas the largest-capacity 2.5-inch model is only 1 terabyte), the DS411slim can make a good alternative in a small form-factor. By the way, the compact size doesn't increase the cost of the product. There is no direct counterpart among 3.5-inch NASes, but the DS411slim is cheaper than the DS411 and about as expensive as the DS411j.

The Synology DS411slim won't convert those looking for a capacious 3.5in NAS, but it isn't meant to. Instead the slim sheds size and decibels to create a diminutive yet powerful alternative for those happy to compromise storage but not performance. Synology's DiskStation Manager also remains one of the most ingenious NAS UIs on the market and extras like mobile apps, security camera and printer support make it a thoroughly comprehensive solution. Tying it all together is a price tag which won't break the bank, just remember to factor in the higher cost of 2.5in drives.

SlashGear‘s review Edit

There’s a price/performance/convenience balance to be made with the DiskStation DS411slim. The barebones RRP of $319.99/£232.99 compares well to other four-drive NAS, but you’ll spend more on drives and get less maximum capacity too. On the flip side, your backup system will likely be quieter and smaller than most of those rivals. In the end, while business users and those with a taste for HD video may want to look to a NAS that accommodates 3.5-inch drives, the DS411slim holds plenty of appeal for the regular consumer. Backup support for multiple PCs and Macs, a wealth of media sharing features and DSM’s software flexibility to turn the DiskStation into a mini server, webhost, ‘Torrent station or jukebox add up to a system with broad appeal and flexibility. Factor in the straightforward UI and compact footprint and you can see why the Synology DiskStation DS411slim comes highly recommended.

Put simply, the Synology DiskStation DS411slim is a great little NAS unit, emphasis on the words little and great.

Despite a few shortcomings, the Synology DiskStation DS411slim makes a worthy upgrade from its processor, the best-of-its-time DS409slim.
