Nokia N9 upcoming update to bring video conferencing, folders a la iOS

Nokia has pleasantly surprised us by delivering timely updates to its Nokia N9 one and only MeeGo device, and another major update, PR 1.2 is on the way. The update will enable the front facing camera and will let you use it to video call your friends. It also adds folders working in iOS-like fashion, support for copy-paste in the browser and other enhancements.
MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan is definitely a more refined version and adds a needed coat of polish to the otherwise very innovative Swipe UI. Some of the new features like the folders one might spark controversy over how new they are when compared with other operating systems, but they’re a welcome addition anyway. The camera application and ...

Most people who either already picked up the N9 or are seriously considering buying it this holiday shopping season know full well that it’s the first, last, and only device that the Finnish handset maker will release running MeeGo/Maemo/Harmattan. That means developers don’t really want to support it since there’s no future in the ecosystem, not to mention the fact that Nokia refused the launch N9 in some of the world’s largest markets, instead opting to release it in a limited number of smaller countries. Now that being said, Nokia’s got a track record of keeping their devices up to date. If you’re lucky enough to own a Symbian^3 device then you’ve already experienced the upgrade to Symbia...

Nokia N9 for sale in the USA, will cost you $690

The Nokia N9, one of the most controversial devices to ever come out of Finland, is now available in the United States. You can order it for $690 from Expansys, an online retailer we thoroughly recommend for those of you who want to get your hands on the latest handsets coming out in Europe and Asia. Before you do however, realize that it’s going to be the one and only device to run MeeGo, it’s not going to get that much official support since it’s shipped in limited quantities, but on the bright side it supports both AT&T’s and T-Mobile’s 3G networks. Now while we didn’t review the N9, the folks at Engadget and The Verge did and both sites have absolutely fallen in love with it. Myriam Joir...

Nokia announces a white N9 and the first software update for N9 owners

Posted on Oct 28, 2011 by MG1

Nokia is currently holding their annual Nokia World event in London right now, and while the important announcements were seen yesterday, things like 4 feature phones and 2 smartphones, both the first Nokias to run Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system, today the Finnish handset maker has surprised us by talking about the N9. Currently the N9 comes in black, blue, and pink, but later this year there will be a new choice: white. It may seem insignificant, especially since Nokia isn’t launching the N9 in very many countries, but Frank Zillikens, who heads up the product marketing for Nokia N9, says: “The manufacturing process for beautiful white products is quite complex and we wanted to ...

Looking to bring the gift of song to your new, somewhat limited edition Nokia N9? Good news, Spotify is offering itself up to the MeeGo gods, bringing its music streaming services to the slick handset by way of the Nokia Store. The app is free, but requires the customary Spotify Premium account for you to get any actual enjoyment out of the thing.

Nokia N9: The Most Amazing Phone You’ll Never Buy

Nokia N9: The Most Amazing Phone You’ll Never Buy

Nokia was nice enough to loan me a Nokia N9, its first and almost certainly last MeeGo-powered smartphone, after I not-so-subtly pointed out that I’d love to give the thing a solid whirl. After having played with it for a day now, I’ll tell you why I think it’s a phenomenal smartphone that rivals the best of ‘em, and why you would probably be better off not buying one anyway.
I’ll start off by explaining that I’m not qualified to be a professional smartphone reviewer, whatsoever. We have our former CrunchGear and MobileCrunch slaves for that type of stuff. That said, I’ve used a bunch of smartphones over the years, of all shapes and sizes, and I know damn well what I want.
If you’re looking ...

Nokia N9 begins shipping at not inexpensive prices

Nokia N9 begins shipping at not inexpensive prices

After months of rumors and pre-orders, the Nokia N9 has finally begun shipping. Today, the Finnish manufacturer announced that its Meego-drenched handsets are now available for consumption, in both 16GB and 64GB variants. Of course, those of us in the US are out of luck, as are those in Germany and the UK (barring any back-door wizardry), but everyone else can grab a 16GB model for the not-so-small price of €480 (about $650), or the 64GB version for the similarly steep price of €560 (roughly $757). Pricing and availability, of course, will vary by region, but you can find more details in the full press release after the break, or at the source link, below.

The Nokia N9 will be considered a rarity in the US, UK and Germany when it's released, but at least fans Down Under won't have to look very far to get their hands on one. Espoo's officially announced its intention of selling the MeeGo device on Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, in addition to distributing it through several major retailers. Look for the one-of-a-kind handset to make its way to Australia in October for roughly $850; those who opt for the 16GB model will be able to choose from black, blue and pink, whereas the 64GB version will only be made available in black. Full presser can be found below.

Nokia N9 gets axed in Germany, global tour looks even more meager

Like slowly waking up from a sweet dream, the Nokia N9 is gradually slipping away from our conscious mind before it's even released. We knew Stephen Elop & Co. didn't have high interest in the one (and only) Meego smartphone in its repertoire, but it's becoming very clear exactly how much the handset doesn't matter to the company.

Nokia withholding N9 from UK as well

Nokia withholding N9 from UK as well

It was revealed yesterday that as per Nokia's new plans to go all-in on Windows Phone in the U.S., it would not be bringing the recently announced MeeGo-powered N9 to American shores. While this made a bit of sense for the U.S. market, it is now believed that Nokia will do the same for the UK, though the UK has been much more supportive of Nokia smartphones in the past.

Nokia N9 MeeGo Phone will not be released in United States

Nokia N9 MeeGo Phone will not be released in United States

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9

Last week we reported that Nokia will launch the Nokia N9 MeeGo phone in Sweden on September 23. This supported hopes for MeeGo fans that the N9 will come in September as well to the United States. It is not going to happen. Engadget asked Nokia for the US release details and got a response that said that Nokia decided not to ship the Nokia N9 in the United States.
As Nokia is not standing behind MeeGo, it is anyway for the best. It would be just a distraction to buy the Nokia N9. It has no future. It could have a bright future, but Nokia is going with Microsoft Windows Phone OS. We will see how that turns out.
The Nokia N9 has a touchscreen only design without the typical home button. The ...

Nokia N9 countdown timer disappears confusing early wannabe MeeGo adopters

Nokia N9 countdown timer disappears confusing early wannabe MeeGo adopters

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9

The Nokia N9 has been graced with a lot of attention for an experimental device running on a platform doomed in the long-term and it even got its own countdown timer page at Nokia Sweden. But now - just as early MeeGo wannabe adopters started the 45-day countdown until September 23rd, the official N9 release date for Sweden - the Finns pulled the timer from the website leaving a swiftly shrinking user base confused.
What could this mean? The first and most realistic guess seems to be that Espoo has delayed the Nokia N9, but removing the timer might also mean that the company is ready to release the phone earlier.
Or was it just a technical issue? We guess that the answer should come soon, b...

Nokia N9 countdown page goes live, 49 days to launch?

Google's powers of awkward PR translation may have been right on the MeeGo-money, judging by this countdown page for the N9. The Swedish site, which just went live today, has begun its 49 days and counting creep to the Gorilla Glass-clad handset's eventual overseas debut. We'd previously heard whispers of an impending September 15th release pegged for the OEM's backyard, but we'll err on the side of Nokia's official launch clock. Head to the source to watch this tantalizing tease of time ticking by.

Nokia N9 release date pushed to mid-September?

Nokia N9 release date pushed to mid-September?

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9

The Nokia N9 flaunts one of the speediest and most impressive cameras out there, but the MeeGo-running device might be delayed and hit shelves only in mid-September, contrary to early talk about it rolling out in the middle of August. The first piece of evidence came from Orange Switzerland which listed the handset with a release date set for September 15th, while later a number of Russian retailers including second-largest phone seller Svyaznoy confirmed that they expect the phone to arrive in mid-September.
This would mean that the phone is likely to meet even more competition from the very successful internationally and soon-to-arrive stateside Samsung Galaxy S II as well as the iPhone5, ...
