ARCAM FMJ BDP100 Pro Reviews

reghardware‘s review Edit

For Arcam’s fan base, this Blu-ray Disc debut should come as a blessed relief. After all the tribulations, the brand has delivered a fine disc spinner that’s an appropriate partner for its AVR range. Will this deck find an audience outside of the Arcam faithful? I suspect not. But that doesn’t make the BDP100 any less special.

But on the downside, the BDP100 is seriously light on features for £1k. There's no 3D compatibility (yet) and none of the web-enabled features so common in the budget sector. This may not necessarily be a concern for some movie enthusiasts, but others may expect more when splashing out this sort of money.

There’s no question that the Arcam FMJ BDP100 Blu-ray player isn’t loaded for bear when it comes to features. But some buyers choose such a player over the kitchen-sink variety for the same reason an audiophile will pay five figures for a bare-bones CD player, or a CD transport and separate D/A converter: performance. The Arcam has a few issues that keep it just shy of earning a Top Pick, including its black and white clipping and the subtle edge enhancement it appears to add to some source material in some circumstances. But its subjective video performance is nonetheless impressive, and its audio performance is beyond criticism. For many, those qualities will be more than enough.

As things stand, we advise caution. The holes in the spec – not so much 3D and streaming as decoding and sockets – irritate. The flaws in its operation downright annoy. But set against all that is its excellent picture and sound quality. That’s enough to give it three stars for now; should Arcam address some of the issues, that might be a verdict we’d feel comfortable revising. Highly promising, yet frustratingly incomplete. Ironing out the glitches would help.
